I am considering a Garmin zumo/nuvi 550 GPS but not sure about the mounting on a gen II. The bracket it comes with looks like something for a pushbike. I was hoping there might be better options to mount it perhaps between the handlebars? If nothing is available I might have to make one but would prefer off the shelf. There isn't a lot of room to mount anything without obscuring instruments or controls.
Anyone looked into the same thing or similar?

just bought the zumo 550 and the mounts are pretty average.may be good for upright bike.they do stick out a fair way.the problem is they give you a suction cup mount and a bolt on mount.each mounts have different connections.if you use the bolt on mount the power cable must stay attached in the mount and its pretty bulky.i used the suction cup on the tank and i used the cable from pc3 lcd screen to power it.(dont know if i should do it like that coz i guess the pc3 is sending out infomation)the unit itself has only a small usb connection so unless you can run it on that some how i dont know if just making a bracket will solve the problem.if anyone has a solution i'd like to know to.the gps is a good unit but mounting it sucks.

don't know what happened there Anyway ,I looked into a gps for the
bike but decieded i didn't want to be distracted by looking at a gps screen.
in my opinion it would be better to get a gps that has text to speech(IE
speak's street names)Garmin do some for about $400.00,program it b4 you
leave, stick it in your pocket & listen to directions via headphones. WALLA

Greeny, the 550 does voice prompts if you use the car mount or a bluetooth headset in your helmet.
Also, I looked at the area I want to mount it when I went for a ride today. I think a turned shaft down the steering head centre with a locating arrangement on the contoured top nut would do the job nicely if it then attached to a standard slimline 550 mount with the power attached.
Hayabusa bike - Does the 550 provide for rider to pillion if bluetooth headsets are used? And same for music from SD card via bluetooth?

Go to shopbot.com.au. They list prices for almost every electrical toy you can imagine from cheapest to most expensive. They are not the seller, just the reference site. I have used the service many times for all sorts of bits and saved thousands. You are still buying from a shop (mostly) so no hidden bits.
They have the 550 from $899 and I have seen most standard prices more like $1400. Still not the cheapest but it seems to be one of only two made for bike use.

i checked out gpsoz and thats a great site,so ill ring tomorrow and see how we go with a couple of different mounts.problem is the cradle that the zumo sits in is so very bulky.gpsoz have a steering nut mount and a resovouir mount so one of them may be the go.
