GPS units - Champs - 20-12-2008 I am considering a Garmin zumo/nuvi 550 GPS but not sure about the mounting on a gen II. The bracket it comes with looks like something for a pushbike. I was hoping there might be better options to mount it perhaps between the handlebars? If nothing is available I might have to make one but would prefer off the shelf. There isn't a lot of room to mount anything without obscuring instruments or controls. Anyone looked into the same thing or similar? RE: GPS units - 2wheelfreak - 20-12-2008 There is a bloke on ebay who sells mounts for gps/video cameras for bikes. They are CNC cut & use the top 4 tank/filler cap bolts to mount. It bolts around the top half of the filler cap ring & puts the gps just above the bottom of the top clamp. They are only around the $20 mark & look sturdy enough to hold a heavier modern video camera, let alone a gps. ![]() RE: GPS units - Champs - 20-12-2008 Thanks 2wheel. That is a great thing. I will look in to it. RE: GPS units - hayabusabike - 20-12-2008 just bought the zumo 550 and the mounts are pretty average.may be good for upright bike.they do stick out a fair way.the problem is they give you a suction cup mount and a bolt on mount.each mounts have different connections.if you use the bolt on mount the power cable must stay attached in the mount and its pretty bulky.i used the suction cup on the tank and i used the cable from pc3 lcd screen to power it.(dont know if i should do it like that coz i guess the pc3 is sending out infomation)the unit itself has only a small usb connection so unless you can run it on that some how i dont know if just making a bracket will solve the problem.if anyone has a solution i'd like to know to.the gps is a good unit but mounting it sucks. WALLA no CRASHE"S RE: GPS units - Champs - 20-12-2008 Greeny, the 550 does voice prompts if you use the car mount or a bluetooth headset in your helmet. Also, I looked at the area I want to mount it when I went for a ride today. I think a turned shaft down the steering head centre with a locating arrangement on the contoured top nut would do the job nicely if it then attached to a standard slimline 550 mount with the power attached. Hayabusa bike - Does the 550 provide for rider to pillion if bluetooth headsets are used? And same for music from SD card via bluetooth? Hope that makes sense. Thanks all for the input so far, it all helps to find something that will work well. Arn't the 550's $1000.00 + RE: GPS units - Champs - 20-12-2008 Go to shopbot.com.au. They list prices for almost every electrical toy you can imagine from cheapest to most expensive. They are not the seller, just the reference site. I have used the service many times for all sorts of bits and saved thousands. You are still buying from a shop (mostly) so no hidden bits. They have the 550 from $899 and I have seen most standard prices more like $1400. Still not the cheapest but it seems to be one of only two made for bike use. RE: GPS units - busacrankin - 21-12-2008 Hi Champs this link sells Ram mounts in USA; http://www.telferizer.com/ These Guys in Mona Vale Sydney; www.gpsoz.com.au have the same mounts for sale in Australia Nick RE: GPS units - hayabusabike - 21-12-2008 busacrankin Wrote:Hi Champs this link sells Ram mounts in USA; http://www.telferizer.com/ i dont know about pillion.not very cluey when it comes to this sort of stuff.i cant even mount it yet ![]() ive been told by people not to use the pc3 lcd screen power lead as it may effect the gps. hayabusabike RE: GPS units - Champs - 21-12-2008 If it (or the headsets themselves) allow rider/pillion comms the package would be complete for me. Looks like I wasn't the first to look at the central mount idea! Maybe just a few years behind the times. Certainly not the first time and won't be the last. The Rams mounts look to be the way to go if it isn't all too bulky. Their installed pics look to be quite neat and tidy. I haven't seen the 550 in person yet. Is it bulky/thick? RE: GPS units - Louwai - 24-12-2008 THe 550 has a high sensitivity GPS receiver. Better than the average. I have a Garmin Hand Held unit, when I have it sitting on the dash in the car, the inbuilt car unit looses Satelite comms under tree cover, but the Garmin Hand Held never does. |
