The radar detector I use picks up the 3 signals used by the cops. K band is the mobile units used in the highway patrols and reflex is the key here to brake hard to avoid the cops locking onto you. KA band is the multi nova road side cameras which put out a weak signal so the detector cannot pick them up until you are about 250 meters from them and again reflex action. Lazer is the most dangerous because if they hit you first go you are gone as the detector will register a lazer but it will be too late. WA have now introduced an undetectable road side camera and I am waiting to hear back from the makers of the detector to see if they are working on detecting the new ones.
A while ago I had a long chat to one of the boys at radar.com in WA and they told me that:
A laser jammer is programmed to jam a laser for 4 seconds and then turn off. The police wont know that you have a jammer because the time it takes for the laser gun to compute a reading is very unpredictable. The gradient of the road, the heat of the day, the humidity, the shape of the vehicle, dirt on the vehicle, even the colour of the vehicle, all these things and more can delay an accurate reading. Story goes that sometimes it can take up to ten seconds for a laser gun to produce a result. One each side of the number plate on a car (even easier on a bike) disguised to look like parking assist buttons would be the go. Apparently the laser isn't a pin point over distance like we get told either. It does cone out a bit which makes detection and jamming very very probable.
Radar detectors are great. Radar from sources such as radar guns sprays all over the place and is usually detectable over hills and around corners etc. The bloke I talked to had very definite recommendations for NSW punters as some detectors are detectable by Mr Plod.
So if your just cruising along and the jammer goes off I figure just lift the foot to bring the speed down in the four seconds you got. If you're giving it plenty, slam on the brakes, pull over, jump out, throw up the hood and start looking around in a most agitated fashion... "whew, I don't know what noise was, and its not doing it now thank goodness, but it sounded real bad... officer. Thanks for coming over though eh."
