Go for the simple fixes first. Like linkage adjustment. Each one of the three Gen II shifter forks has a barrel shaped stud that engages with its own track on the gear shifter drum. The barrel shape is supposed to make shifting smoother, however I've found that over time, or prolonged harsh shifting, the high points on the barrel wear flat and the tracks are likewise worn. This can create shifting problems but are most likely to lead to a bent shift fork. I replace them with Gen I shift forks, the stud is basically your traditional top hat design.
