Sad but true as the writer said.

That's not the full story.
Foreign aid keeps certain countries in their place so we can continue to enjoy our way of life. It's a capitalist economy necessity and we get more than our money's worth paying it.

Botswana:
Receives about 400million dollars in U.S aid and loans. They pay what they owe every year and have no debt. They don't want aid, they want the free trade the U.S denies them. With free trade they can make 4 billion dollars. The U.S denies them free trade because that would kill certain aspects of the (still not bad) U.S economy as they wouldn't be able to compete with Botswana's low manufacturing/servicing cost. That 400million in aid and loans is worth upwards of 30 times that for the U.S.

Rest assured, capitalism doesn't thrive on throwing money away. When we give aid, someone somewhere has done the bean counting. If we were serious about helping our Vets and elderly, we'd all pay more tax and take lower pay rises with periodic wage freezes.

I think it's worth. Do you?

We should measure our society by the quality of life enjoyed/endured by it's lowest strata. There are real things that can be done - we just won't do them and the Politicians know it.
Carpe Diem!
