Sad but true as the writer said. - kawasuki - 11-10-2011 HOW TRUE ! We're "broke" & can't help our own Seniors, Troops, Orphans, Homeless etc. In the last month we have provided aid to Haiti , Indonesia , Timor , and Turkey , Greece , Pakistan . Our Aged Pensioners living on a 'fixed income' Receive no aid or get any breaks while our Government and religious organizations pour Hundreds of Millions of $$$$$$'S and Tons of Food to Foreign Countries! We have thousands of adoptable children who are shoved aside to make room for the adoption of foreign orphans. AUSTRALIA a country where we have homeless without shelter, children and adults going to bed hungry, Elderly going without 'needed' medication, and Mentally ill without treatment -etc,etc. YET................... They are requesting donations for the people of Pakistan , a country currently buying fighter planes worth $1.4 billion. TV stations, ships and planes lining up with food, water, tents clothes, bedding,,Doctors and medical supplies. Imagine if the *GOVERNMENT* gave 'US' The same support they give to other Countries. Sad, Isn't It? RE: Sad but true as the writer said. - ROD - 12-10-2011 I dont normaly get into these threads but after seeing the other night what some of the refugees are getting im thinking i might go to indinisia and jump on a boat to Australia 4 star motel $400 a week internet computers mobile phones smokes and i thought they were bad for us free dental and health But trust my luck my boat would sink so i would not make it to Australia to get free smokes so i can get sick ansd sue Australia for giving me free smokes RE: Sad but true as the writer said. - Bill Gaheer - 12-10-2011 adoption is very messy, we always wanted to adopt a baby girl and raise her as our child - since I am not 'Australian' I cannot adopt a Ausitalian child, since I am not in India - even adopting it from there is extremely difficult. I think all govt's should allow the able and willing to adopt regardless of the nationality......very unfortunate - somewhere there is a child who can get a home and family..... Give it to the Chinese, let them sort it out! They make more pollution than everyone else combined!! RE: Sad but true as the writer said. - Diablo - 12-10-2011 Would love to get on my soap box here, but, what the hell, Australians are just too apathetic!!! Can't give a rats arse! RE: Sad but true as the writer said. - Throwdown! - 15-10-2011 That's not the full story. Foreign aid keeps certain countries in their place so we can continue to enjoy our way of life. It's a capitalist economy necessity and we get more than our money's worth paying it. Botswana: Receives about 400million dollars in U.S aid and loans. They pay what they owe every year and have no debt. They don't want aid, they want the free trade the U.S denies them. With free trade they can make 4 billion dollars. The U.S denies them free trade because that would kill certain aspects of the (still not bad) U.S economy as they wouldn't be able to compete with Botswana's low manufacturing/servicing cost. That 400million in aid and loans is worth upwards of 30 times that for the U.S. Rest assured, capitalism doesn't thrive on throwing money away. When we give aid, someone somewhere has done the bean counting. If we were serious about helping our Vets and elderly, we'd all pay more tax and take lower pay rises with periodic wage freezes. I think it's worth. Do you? We should measure our society by the quality of life enjoyed/endured by it's lowest strata. There are real things that can be done - we just won't do them and the Politicians know it. RE: Sad but true as the writer said. - Troppo - 15-10-2011 I have worked in the aid sector. Aid is NOTHING to do with aid, but all about political influence.
