Heya Richard...
With his age and experience in dirtbike riding....I'd be inclined to suggest something as sporty as possible, like a 250 ninja....but his height and weight probably suggest something bigger, physically and in engine size, maybe like a GS500!?!
It's a damn shame the kids aren't allowed to ride the super-fun bikes that they really want to (RG's, NSR's, etc)!!! My first roadie was an '83 RG250!!! I had PLENTY of crashes and get-offs on that sweet little thing.....but it WASN'T "the bike" that caused me to crash....much, much more about ME being "young, dumb...and fulla c*m"!!!
BTW....I think I learned LOTS of skills on that type of bike (that have kept me alive....to this point anyway) that I would NOT have learned on something more "docile", for sure!!! 
The simple fact is...I would of crashed ANYthing I was riding HARD back then (...even a 49cc scooter, or the pimply-faced chick 2 doors up)!!
They have got it ALL wrong with the learner stuff these days.....and don't even get me started about the "don't feed the seagulls" BS they spin lately, too!!!
I hope which ever way you decide to go with it....your son enjoys the qual time you guys are gonna have together out there!!!!
