Road bike for Novice - rjw3105 - 31-08-2011

G'Day All,
The oldest of my sons is old enough to start thinking about riding on the road. He's already done a bit of dirt riding and has a reasonable idea how to ride. Though he hasn't been for a while because some wonderful soul stole his KX. I had a look at the list of learner approved bikes and it's more or less open slather under 660cc (not aloud to ride RGV or NSR's though, go figureScary)
So if you were asked your opinion, what would you recommend for a 17 YO with the following physical deformities:- 6'2" 90kg's
good looking young fella. SHit..when I put it like that, I'm not even sure he's mine!!!!Roll
Let me know what you reckon.
Thanks all.
Cheers
Richard Biker

I recommend the GS500e or GS500f.
I had one as a learner and i was 6'4" and 110kg. It was a good sized bike and it would hit freeway speeds easily.
You will pick one up under $5,000, and the good thing is they are nearly worth the same as they were 3 years ago.

Or the SV650 with LAMS approval

RE: Road bike for Novice - BikerBoy - 31-08-2011

GSX650F.

He's pretty much the same height & weight as me and I found the 650F damn easy to ride.
I could not recommend the bike enough and know alot of riders that have them and will not trade or upgrade.
I had mine for just over a year (full version) did 35,000k on it and never had a single issue (with the bike that is)

Have a look through www.gsx650f.biz

This was mine.

I do a lot of work with L platers and the GS500F is a ripper of a bike. As long as you spend around $5000 on it, you'll get that back, they really keep their resale value. Only thing to look out for is they tend to be fairly soft in the front suspension. If you want, you can put heavier springs in it, but a lot of people don't bother.

Lovely bike, you don't have to wait for them to catch up. Talk to Fitz, he is a big unit and he had one.

ONCE, we went two-up on it. Now THAT was funny.

Heya Richard...

With his age and experience in dirtbike riding....I'd be inclined to suggest something as sporty as possible, like a 250 ninja....but his height and weight probably suggest something bigger, physically and in engine size, maybe like a GS500!?!

It's a damn shame the kids aren't allowed to ride the super-fun bikes that they really want to (RG's, NSR's, etc)!!! My first roadie was an '83 RG250!!! I had PLENTY of crashes and get-offs on that sweet little thing.....but it WASN'T "the bike" that caused me to crash....much, much more about ME being "young, dumb...and fulla c*m"!!! Idiot2 BTW....I think I learned LOTS of skills on that type of bike (that have kept me alive....to this point anyway) that I would NOT have learned on something more "docile", for sure!!! Pi_thumbsup

The simple fact is...I would of crashed ANYthing I was riding HARD back then (...even a 49cc scooter, or the pimply-faced chick 2 doors up)!!

They have got it ALL wrong with the learner stuff these days.....and don't even get me started about the "don't feed the seagulls" BS they spin lately, too!!! Lol3 Pi_freak Lol3

I hope which ever way you decide to go with it....your son enjoys the qual time you guys are gonna have together out there!!!! Yes

SV650s, v twin too....

RE: Road bike for Novice - Bill Gaheer - 31-08-2011

The reason for SV650 LAMS are specially around having stronger suspension, better engine traction, better brakes and bigger wheels.

I wouldnt recommend anyone a Hysoung or Kawasaki 250 Ninja because both the bikes have dead pick up. I tried both as I was helping a friend buy one. - would also consider the BMW f650 or f800 (One of them is LAMS) for the very same reason.

I have done the Buzman thing many times (57 - crashes till date) - 18 bikes lost in the process - all from 100 CC to 350 CC. nothing is more important then having capacity to pull (Power) or Stop when needed.
Bill

I had the same problem.. I had nylon spacers made to stop the front diving when i sat on it. Probably not the greatest idea but it worked for the 6 months i had it.

RE: Road bike for Novice - gggsxr11 - 31-08-2011

i took my young bloke out the bush on two dirt bikes, one a two stroke 175 then gave him a go on a 500 4 stroke single and rode around with him to check whether he was capable of riding a bike before i released him into the the open road amongst cars.
i hope he can ride a bike because if he can"t learning amongst the cars is just a suicide trip in my eyes.

RE: Road bike for Novice - BabyBusa - 31-08-2011

The GS500F was my first bike and the bike I got my licence on....it was awesome.

Some of the benefits with the GS500F are:
*it is an easy to ride bike, great for a learner
*you don't have to trade, sell or change the ECU in it for a new bike to keep up, once off L or P plates (unlike most LAMS bikes, like the GS650F)
*can do freeway speeds when that speed limit is an option for the rider
comfortable riding position

Good luck with whatever you purchase.

GS500 is perfect. Have him look at it a step to getting what he wants. It'll keep up with all but the most spirited of riding whilst going through the "P" doldrums, and as Heidi says, it will hold it's value for when he trades up.
