Manual ones are only as good as the guy adjusting it, Get it serviced at a dealer that hasn't seen one before and anything may happen.
Proper procedure as per the instructions calls for removing the cam cover and setting to X free play, don't know of many done this way!!
Hydraulic ones are mostly fool proof and since 01 reasonably reliable
