The chain doesn't have to come off completely, from what I understand.... just skipping should be enough to do damage.
Bent valves means cracked valve guides, and most likely damaged piston heads where the valves actually whacked the pistons.
Keep in mind that I am the least techinically-minded person in the world. I just know this because I've been through it...
Notice the third set of valves from the left.... one extremely bent valve. Ask the repairer to look at the pistons too. I'm sure you'll see valve imprints on some of them.
In this one, see how the top left valve isn't sitting flush?
