as ray said the ECU is different but the earlier models had their teething problems as in Timing Chain Tensioners the 02 had the starter clutch issues which by now should be all sorted I personally reckon anything from 03 upwards is a safe bet but I do ride a 00 model myself and have no problems I do know of a very nice red one for sale from a fellow member have a look in the for sale section on the site http://www.australian-hayabusa-club.com/...p?tid=7550
