2008 HAYABUSA RECALL? - is it effecting Australia or just USA ?

Good news readers, you can inspect the bike yourself without removing the instrument surrounds.
Simply put the bike on the sidestand and put the bars to full lock to the left side..
You can see the cable tie and the grey tape clearly down the side of the steering column.
You can trace the ignition lead back to the cable tie and if the ignition lead is on top of the two switchblock leads and the grey tape is under the cable tie, there is no need to replace the ignition switch.
I will still be taking my bike in for the official inspection when called but it looks like not all bikes are affected.

Here is a photo of the cable tie on my bike.
The grey tape is under the tie and the ignition lead is on top of the two switchblock leads as they should be.

It looks as if it is affecting Australian models as I received a letter from Suzuki yesterday and it states in part…

“Our investigation has identified that there is a possibility that the ignition switch lead wire can be affected following repeated movement of the handlebar (worst case). In the case of the lead wire breaking, electric power supply will shut off, and the engine may stall. In view of the problem, we have decided to carry out a recall campaign to inspect the ignition switch lead wire routing. In cases where the lead wire is routed incorrectly, the lower portion of the ignition switch containing the lead will require replacement.
Please try to limit the amount of time spent riding the motorcycle until this Safety Recall Campaign has been carried out.

This Safety Recall Campaign will commence immediately.

You should contact your nearest Autorised Suzuki Motorcycle Dealer to arrange for tis work to be carried out as soon as possible. It will be done at no cost to you for part or labour
.”

It doesnâ€t state what VINâ€s are affected as it only lists my particular bike. Anyway I guess this answers the question the recall will affect bikes here in Aus.

I contacted my dealer today and they will perform the inpsection tomorrow lunchtime as my VIN falls within the recall range. I will post any news after I get back. I inspected my wiring last night and based on what busgo is saying mine looks ok and has plenty of free play when twisting the bars.

I got my recall notice in the mail today. My bike falls in the VIN range above, booked in next wednesday for inspection but I'll have a look as per Bugso's post above.

One issue we seem to be running into here in the States is that dealers are not reading the Safety Campaign Recall closely enough. Some are thinking that all K8's in the recall will need a new switch installed.

That is not correct. ONLY if the bike has been on the road for any amount of time (be it a customer's bike, or a dealer demo), AND inspection reveals wire harness mis-routing, only THEN does the ignition switch get replaced.

If there is no mis-routing, a small embossed dot is punch next to the VIN number to indicate the bike has been through the Safety Campaign. If the wire harness is mis-routed but the bike is still in the showroom and has zero miles on it, the harness is correctly re-routed, and the VIN number punched. No switch replacement in that scenario.

Here is a thumbnail image of the exact inspection flow chart that Suzuki dealers are supposed to follow to carry out this Safety Campaign:

Just checked my ignition cable routing and according to what I`ve just read, my cable routing is incorrect.

This first photo shows the cable exiting the bottom of the ignition switch (red and blue wires visible) and proceeding to the wire retainter behind the right switchblock cable as per incorrect layout.
The innition cable is quite taut.

This secend photo clearly shows the cable tie bundle, with the grey tape underneath and only visible to the front. Incorrect, according to the explanation.

I have not recieved any advice regarding this recall. My vin-no is JS1CK111300100275.

Recall VIN last six digits: 100001 - 100575.

Just called TeamHomo Virginia and they have to order in the part. They told me it would take "a few hours", and once the part was ordered on my behalf I would have to get it done through them. Otherwise, it can be done at any Suzuki dealer.

Hi all,

I just got back from the dealer - my inspection proved to be positive with no replacement of the switch required. The mechanics said that if there is a kink in the wiring or the cable is tight then only then it should be replaced. A home test is to turn the bars left to right a coupleo f times and there should be minimal impact on the cable. If the clip is set along way back from the ignition block that it makes manouvering of the bars casue stress on the cable then only then will it perhaps grind and snap. They said it is not known why the clip is there in the first place given the wiring is fiastened in two other areas - he said the clip can grind away over time and so removal is required and extra tape to secure cable.

My inspection took 30 seconds and the extra taping and removal of the clip about 30 seconds.

Mine must have been done on a monday or friday, can't see any grey tape at all and it's real tight on RH lock.

Hey Spinner Spanner,
Your dealer is disobeying the clear instructions to all the dealers to advise any owner that they must stop riding the bike until it is inspected. If the ignition lead snaps it will cause total loss of power.

If I did the visual inspection myself and found the leads to be in the same condition as the ones posted by Markoz, I would not be riding it anywhere till fixed.
If you have checked it yourself and found no fault, as I have done, then fair enough keep riding.

I have booked mine in for next Saturday to get the clearance and Vin plate stamped.

Another correction guys.
After I read Markoz's post with the photos, I went and had another look at mine.
In Markoz's top photo, he is showing the wrong location.
The bare wires you can see are simply the Imobiliser indicator light on the top of the ignition and that is not the problem area.
The problem is down on the steering head column way underneath the ignition switch itself.
The ignition wiring comes out of the BOTTOM of the switch and then should loop out for free play and then down on top of the two switchblock leads to where the grey tape is located.
Sorry if I mislead anyone but in Markoz's bottom photo, it does look like his leads are not fitted properly and he may still have a problem.

Busgo you are correct and I appologise if I misled anyone. I recieved my recall letter yesterday and have also had another good look.
The cabling wasnt exactly as the instructions imply, but I was able to gently manipulate them to their described position. The position of my ignition harness is correct. This photo should show enough detail.I also adjusted the imobilizer cable for more slack.
