Mystery/SOLVED

Not sure about the master size being different, clymer doesn't mention it but slave is smaller, thats why the rubber seal kept popping out as I found when I went back in there to check things out. That would also explain the extra lever effort rquired on later models, less mechanical/hydraulic advantage. Yes the clutch pack is different on later models, 1st fibre plate nearest to motor is thicker and inside it are 2 thin metal rings that make up the anti rattle spring and seat. I guess the slave size was reduced to increase the throw so as the anti rattle spring does nt drag. You can upgrade an early model by changing the 1st fibre to the new thicker one and putting in the 2 spring parts.

G'day
FWIW, my 99 had a slave cylinder leak, and I replaced it with a genuine 99 part, but that lasted less than 12 months before starting to leak again. I commented when it was in for a service and the slave cylinder was replaced by a current (06) jobbie, which looks the same and bolts straight in. But the lever effort is slightly higher and the clutch engages over a shorter travel, so I deduced there must be a slight difference in bore. However, well worth doing, IMO.
