HELP!!! Busa running very bad
#1
Hi there,

I was riding to work this morning, all was going well when suddenly the bike started running rough, lost power, and would not idle at all. I was on a 1/4 tank on the way to work, and thought it was taking in dirty fuel. I refueled to see if that sorted it out, thinking it was bodgy fuel. Nope, that did not sort it.

I lifted the tank at lunchtime today, checked the plugs which were a bit fouled, gave them a clean, but to no avail. Now I have a bike that I am pretty sure is running on three cylinders, surges between on and off throttle application, and makes a whole heap of smoke.

I will be sifting through the service manual, but if any gurus on here could offer any advice I am all ears. And trash the red bike is not welcome advice in this instance.Pi_freak

Do you have any "extra's" plugged in, PC, alarm etc?
Otherwise check your vac lines to the Map sensor on the back of the airbox.
I take it there are no FI codes or you would have mentioned it?

Bike has no extras like alarm, but has a TSI onboard. I have not checked for FI codes yet but will if the airbox stuff doesnt yield any fruit.

Hi there,

An update. I lifted the tank tonight and found that the MAP hose was indeed disconnected but at the Tee piece which sits below the airbox and behind the throttle bodies.

Reconnected the hose and attempted to restart the bike. The bike still ran very rough and with very little power. The motor sounded as though it was still running on three cylinders.

I have removed the airbox and have pulled the spark plugs, all of which were fouled and one of which was oil coated. I also have some oil up in the airbox. After I removed the airbox there was a small pool of oil under the bike.

Do you think the oil is from my efforts to ride a 3cyl Busa yesterday? If I replace plugs and allow the motor to air with the plugs out for a day then reassemble, will that possibly work?

Id be getting a compression test if the plugs oily. Its common on all red busas.Lol3If the plugs just black and wet i,d check the injectors and spark.No4 injector always seems dirty as its the last on the line.Fault codes c32-35 are injectors.Just eliminate one thing at a time.Oil in the airbox would likely come from the pcv hose. When you start it have this hose pulled off the airbox and put your thumb over it and feel for pressure when you rev it(their should be bugger all unless the rings are allowing blowby).

How long were you running it while it was playing up ? probably fouled plugs, it there was much running at less than 5 % throttle
Cyl not firing can pump a little oil as the rings are not seated properly by combustion.

Mate my bike had pretty much the same symptons you describe (minus the smoke) and it turns out the problem was clogged injectors and fuel filter

Hi everybody.

Firstly I would like to thank everybody who posted or pm'd and offered advice. The initial advice, surprisingly was pretty much on the money. So the cause and solution was as follows; Hopefully this helps those who follow in our path.

Symptom.
Bike runs like crap, feels like it's on three cylinders. Bike will not idle at all. Excessive smoke. Worlds first diesel Hayabusa!!!

Cause.
Air hose disconnected from MAP sensor. MAP sensor is located on the back of the airbox. Mine was separated at the tee piece below the MAP sensor itself.

Solution.
Reconnect MAP sensor air line. Clean or replace spark plugs.

Hope that helps. I learned from the experience, and was glad that I could sort it without needing a mechanic. Thanks a whole lot guys, your help is much appreciatedPi_thumbsupPi_thumbsupYes

wow... very cool. Why does such a little thing cause such an issue?

Done it myself, left a hose off.
no vac signal to the map sensor makes it think your manifold vacuum is low (accellerating) and it fuels accordingly

but would over fueling cause white smoke and all four spark plugs to be coated in oil?
