There's a brand EZYCHEM that is hard to get, but brilliant. I'll find out a bit more for u in a few days when I go back to work. Work in Paint. Dept. at Frankston and as AIrcraft Mechanic dealing with the alloys so I'll dig something up!
I used straight off-the-shelf stripper of unkonw brand with no detriment (but I did choose one that specifically mentioned aluminium in its list of "safe" metals...)
I dont have to worry about using a paint stripper as my brother just got a job at a metal polishing place.
He said I can get the rims done fill rim done for about $25.I just hope he stay in the job long enough.
Hey Aerocat
Have you been able to find out anymore about the spacific paint strippers they use on aluminium in the aviation industry
Cheers WTFWT
sorry Shorrty, the day I get back to work they send me out to this little airport at Coldstream to fix some idiots f***-up! On a previous paint job of this Piper, some noggin sanded the paint down, BUT SANDED THE RIVETS HEADS OFF ON DOME HEAD RIVETS!!!!!!!! That'll hold the plane wings together.....NOT!! Usually they paint strip planes down!
I'm back at Moorabbin on Tuesday after I finish out there so I'll find out that morning on our tins. I wish I had my Busa out that way near Coldstream - had some good back roads and up around the hills for a quick squirt at Lunch. No good for morning tho - was 1 degrees C at 6:30am other day !!!!
Hey Aero
I lived in Coldstream for 15 years. Now live in Mt Evelyn. That belly landing made it in the local papers.
Ian Sharp used to be the CFI at Coldstream many years ago. He taught me back in 72 at Moorabbin at the Civil Flying School used to be owned by Bib Stillwell. Flew beachcraft mesketeers.
Not Riding Servicing WTFWT
Hey Shortty, its good to see someone who lives on this side of town,as i live in Wandin.Howdy neighbour .Aerocat if you wont a real rush, take the road from coldstream to yarra glen. The first part is dead straight and if you hit the creast(where the school is)at about 230kphs as i did you can get some good air .I dont recommend you do this while the school is in though,as i think its a 60k zone then
At least at the end of the straight there is an escape rout before the left hander and just over the bridge. WTFWT
Shortty, I see you know the airport well.... haven't had any belly landings have we.... just joking!! The one that did the wheels up last week was a day the the owner should have never got out of bed!! Apparently, new owner bought it in Sydney, didn't fuel up before he departed for Moorabbin, his engine started coughing and losing power above Coldstream, called a MAYDAY call, was diverted by Radar Control to Coldstream airfield, didn't get approach right, did a go-around....(on f*-all fuel....probably fumes), and on final forgot to put gear down!!! ..... But, he didn't see these 3 green lights!
Damage was bent prop (like a banana), and only minor cowl flap and under panel damage. Unfortunately with propellor strikes nowadays the engine has to be stripped apart for inspection and crack testing - big $ !! He was flying a early model Mooney M20 low wing, sleek and fast!!
Thanx RR7777, I'll try that road out soon - sounds awesome. We should do a ride out there soon.....
Now, paint strippers..... we use a really good brand by the name of TURCO, product no. T-5351. It is available from Henkel Australia Pty Ltd, 135-141 Canterbury Rd, Kilsyth, Victoria. Ph: (03) 9728-7200. Ph. them to see if they may sell a 1 litre tin to you? I think it is made especially for aluminium and alloys without etching them at all!! Had a look at the other public use paint strippers at Bunnings where I work - all were just general use - didn't state anything special about alloy. In fact, none even mentioned Aluminium or non-ferrous metals!! SPARKO is usually a good brand to get if any from Bunnings.
If that is no good - get back to me....
Cheers, Peter ........talking - TOO GOD DAMN COLD TO RIDE!!
Has anyone used the method of applying paint striper to the outer edge of their rims to remove the bulk of the paint before polishing and if so what brand was used that would not etch into the aluminium.
