Repacking cans

Ok here we go again people that I know have bought Yoshis. Megacycle and other cans for their assorted bikes all of them have had to get them repacked after about 12 mths so tell me how much does repacking cost and is this something that a buyer should be aware of when buying a set of second hand cans?
With the Acropovic cans there is a life time warranty on them and they guarantee that they don't need repacking ever so for a person that wants to start fixing things that ain’t broke wouldn't they be the way to go as in the long run you would save money!
Why do people spend between $1500-$2500 on an exhaust system only to get rid them 12 mths later why not wait until you have the money and buy the right thing the first time, this is what I did with the Busa f*** settling for second best when the best is only a few grand more I suppose my new motto could be (((Screamin not Dreamin)))

Sorry I got carried away there just makes me wonder why some people sell secondhand cans for a 3rd of the retail price if they are so good why the hell are ya selling them? I wonder if this ia another can of worms begging to be opened?

Good point exhilr8, I find most people do mods in stages to keep up front costs down & guage the difference each step makes but yeah , why not go straight to the top if your budget stretches that far by all means. In hindsight perhaps I should have gone that way myself

Haven't heard of anyone complaining about the need to repack their cans & I assume you mean replacing the noise dampening material inside requiring dismantling & reassembly. I would imagine that a competent home mechanic with a drill & pop rivet gun could do this for little cost

Anyone ?

As far as I'm concerned basically all mufflers need repacking, but Carbon Fibre ones need more attention. regardless of what they are and how much there worth, alloy, stainless, titanium and especially c/f. From Acro to Yoshi and all the little ones like megacycle and formula one.
I don't care what anyone tells u.....

Ever had a good look at the moto gp bikes, notice how small their mufflers are!

They don't use a great deal of packing. Packing is only necesary because of polution and noise regulation commissioned by the EPA. If we didn't have that law we'd all be running straight pipes (and going deaf at the same time)

C/F mufflers need to be checked more often because c/f absorbs more heat and therefore burns more of the packing as it goes.( It also disperses more heat as well and therefore cools down quicker) also another reason for carbon discs in gp racing.
But back to the point, the only mufflers I know of that don't need repacking are Staintune, this is because they use mechanical baffles and therefore are completely welded shut. (hence the funny sound they make), but if you notice their c/f ones they still use rivets.
it's a fairly easy job to do as long as you have a rivet gun and power drill.

C/f mufflers should be checked every 10k and all others around 25-30k. but thats my opinion anyway.
Muffler packing starts around $10 and goes up to $55 depending on brands and such

Apparently my staintunes dont need repacking.They are packed with stainless steelwool which doesnt burn out and is guarenteed for the life of the mufflers.

That's true as well rocketrod, but not all manufactures use this method and is why Staintune use silencer plugs in the back of their mufflers because it's too loud without them. Stainless steel packing dosn't absorb as much noise.......

Anyway , I could go on about this topic for ages but a little inspection now and again might be worth alot of money down the track especially on c/f mufflers, I've seen it too many times. Customers start complaining of cracked carbon skins because they don't think they have to repack, they don't get told how to look after them....

Staintune mufflers are sold with sound plugs in the end of the muffler, you can pull them out if u wish or leave it in...you can buy them seperately as well for around $40.

You should have got one when you purchased your muffler, unless Staintune have changed their design and I don't know about it.
Go to your local shop and have a look at them and you'll get a better picture of what i'm talking about.

I know what your talking about,its just i pulled mine straight out as soon as i got the suckers on.With the caps they are almost as quiet as std(shithouse)

That's the whole idea, It's to give the owners a choice of what they want (legal noise limit or outright kaos) I know which one I prefer but different strokes for different fokes I guess.

a loud bike is a safe bike me thinks

ps - what's all this about exhaust packing? just pull it all out and you wont have to worry about it

Or send the can to Ballistic in Geelong. Have can pulled apart the baffle sleeved on the outside, voila a bloody loud exhaust!

Staright pipes and going deaf sounds like a plan to me kamakaze I own 2 v8's and both are loud the rumble I get from my ute would make you guys wet ya self maybe that why I want the busa LOUD hehe

So I imagine that the symptoms of mufflers needing repacking is an increase in noise as the insulating material degrades , disintegrates, & is blown out of the muffler ?

Some or most people prolly like it that way
So if you don't repack, what will happen ?

I'm hearing ya, that's the way I prefer it myself. Took the can off one time and gave it a rev , f*** it was sweet .(wish I could ride around like that all day)..........
