I raise this point because of the recent push for NSW to follow Victoria's lead in frequent, mobile, hidden cameras. In terms of saving lives, I'm assuming Victoria has lower annual deaths, although I do wonder if that's calculated per capita.
Anyway, I've noticed this before in previous years, that over the holiday period most times NSW is comparable with Victoria and maybe even Queensland when considering the difference in populations. Read the recent news report below and notice that the only State (Territory) to be death free is the tiny ACT, followed by the other (no speed limit at the time) territory with just 1 death.
"Nineteen people were killed on NSW roads over the Christmas-New Year period, 15 in Victoria, 13 in Queensland, four in Tasmania, Western Australia recorded six deaths, while South Australia had three.
One person died on the Northern Territory's road, while the Australian Capital Territory remained fatality free".
Speed is 3rd or 4th on the list of accident causes, but the only one where money can be easily raised. Everyone knows the con, why can't they just be honest that it's a tax? Then who would care? It's being treated like an idiot that annoys me.
It's often been said that motorist should be massively law abiding for a year or two, then the lost revenue would force the state to at least come clean. Well that must be true, because this ridiculous campaign comes on the back of 200,000 less tickets being issued in NSW. Instead of saying "good the message is getting through" they're whinging about the lost monies. Wankers!
the other option to being a lawabiding citzen in which they will then drop speed limits buy speed guns with an apparent longer range and having the fit gps trackers to everyones cars/bikes so they can monitor us for speed is.............................................
CIVIL f*&^ing WAR!!! Ill go ge3t my gun cause our governemnt wankers are complete and utter F@$K tards i got a better idea lets all move to one state and take it as our own by force we shall call it the beautiful land of the rising busa cause there aint no chance of getting a polly wankers to stop there taxing us at everything we do peacfully. i know Max will be with me, Ray has guns to. so lets go M109R for sale PM me for a good time oops i mean dealEdited by: DAN85 at: 6/1/07 22:10
Australians are just too laid back and apothetic Dantheman.
Sooner or later thre will be civil unrest as the yoke of oppression becomes too much for common men and women to take. We are being GST's and Taxed to death by governments, councils and the Federal government. We can't blame the Police, they are just another government instrumentality doing their masters bidding as does the Tax man, the garbage man and the RTA man (read these "man" words as being generic for women, girls and Handa riders as well.)
Come the revolution. We'll be ready.

Far out don't get me started on the topic of governments, police or guns please..........
Was just coming back from summernats a couple of hours ago - on Northbourne just before the Exhibition park turnoff. Anyway, I was trundling along at about 70 in an 80 zone, then the lights turned orange, so I took it up to about 85 to beat the lights. Anyway, see a flashing light in my mirrors so I pull over. Turns out the cop wanted to give me a lecture about running orange lights of all things lol (no ticket) !!!!
What was the point of that????
Personally I think he just pulled me over just to have a good look at the bike.
Anyway, the irony of the situation is that I'm pretty sure the cop ran a red light just to be able to pull me over for nothing - work that out !!!
It's the old adage isn't it - one law for them and another for us.
On the topic of guns, I don't see how it is fair that just about the whole population of Australia has to be punished for the sins of one crazed gunman (Matin Bryant, if I'm not much mistaken). Australia is not America where every person is out to kill each other. We Aussies are a lot more sensible and intelligent bunch, so I see no need for the guns laws to be the way they are.
The sad thing is it stops average joes such as myself from enjoying myself i.e. going out hunting roos or foxes around the place, and instead I supposed to derive my enjoyment from "fun" activities like playing computer games like half my generation these days ????
I would just love to go out roo shooting, even if it is only once, but unfortunately the way our country is becoming paranoid about national security garbage it doesn't look like that'll ever happen (sigh).
Get lost, it's just not me !!!!!
Anyway that's just my two cents worth - I am basically in agreement with everything that's been said her so far.
Paul.
Paul,
If you got pulled over for breaking the law and didn't get booked - think yourself lucky.
Many other cops would have taken great pleasure in giving you a ticket.
another lesson learned.. (maybe)

unfortunatly tenacious i cant agree with you on that one. red lights are one thing i believe must be obeyed. if we start seeing them casually whats to say someone doesnt take you, me or another member out as our light goes green and we take off just as some body flys through there red light. what i am opposed to is the speed limits and how the government has made it there safety sales pitch that the slower you go then safer you are, and while in some situations that is indeed corect these situations are rare and i believe it is far more dangerouse to sit at 110kph on 1000km's of relatively straight uneventful road than it is to sit at 140-150kph or a bit more if the driver is competent. i realise things brings up the argument what about those of us who are not competant drivers etc. if you not competant enough to handle a vehicle on good, sraight and wide roads then dont be f*&^ing driving. im all for teaching people how to drive and ride properly from the begining. raise the driving exam bar it needs to be harder to get your license and plus what the f*** do you need to be able to reverse 80m for in the drving test(car license in ACT) M109R for sale PM me for a good time oops i mean dealEdited by: DAN85 at: 7/1/07 10:28
I read a report on road deaths back in 2003 that tried to analyse the carnage from a number of unusual perspectives.
The first one that caught my eye was called the 'Crossroads effect' which in basic terms stated that because NSW was so large and was sandwiched in the middle of Vic and Qld, every vehicle travelling from Vic -> Qld or Qld -> Vic had to pass through NSW. Add to that the obvious point that every visitor from out of state travelling to NSW also used our roads plus, every NSW traveller going anywhere also did the same. It went on to claim that NSW carried up to 75% of ALL Christmas/New Years road movements NATIONALLY yet accounted for less than 30% of the road toll for that period.
There were a number of really interesting facts and I wish I could find that report. Some of the ones I remember were ....
A high proportion of accidents (not neccessarily resulting in deaths) during that period involved drivers who began their trip either directly after finishing work OR in the early hours of the morning when they would normally be asleep. Most drivers who fall asleep at the wheel and crash (while on a straight road) are classified as 'Fatigue affected', however if they met disaster on a bend and there are no skid marks - for some reason its classified as 'Excess speed for the conditions'.
Another interesting point was that if you subtracted deaths of out-of-state drivers from the total, apparently the number of deaths is line-ball or slightly LESS than average for NSW during the same days of the week for any time of the year. In other words, if the Christmas break was Saturday to Tuesday (as it was this year) if you stripped out the out-of state deaths, then the NSW road toll for any average Saturday to Tuesday period was about the same.
On the comment that we should all be law abiding and send the Govt. broke. This is obviously going to cause more problems for motorists as revenue drops and the Govt. becomes more desperate. This is evidenced by the fact that there were 200,000 less tickets issued in the past 12 months, yet they are talking about introducing stealth detection here. Eventually, we will be driving everywhere at 40km/h and our speedo will be linked to the RTA central computer and will shoot off a signal every time we go 1km/h over the limit and a ticket will be emailed to you before you even get home. Then will we finally jack up and complain ??? The older I get, the better I was. Regards.... Rob
Oh.... one other point. If the revolution comes, it won't be because we all know we're being ripped off and labelled as criminals for our driving habits just so the Govt. can raise money. Everybody already knows that.
The issue will be 'indirect taxation', leading hopefully to corruption charges.
I've said it before... just charge us all an extra $250 per annum and raise the revenue openly and with transparency - then get off our backs and quit with the bullshit.
The older I get, the better I was. Regards.... RobEdited by: AstroBusa at: 7/1/07 11:59
Dan I think you missed the point there just a bit - it had nothing to do with red lights, only orange. I went through the lights as they were orange, not red.
Still haven't run a red light in my life to date yet.
I've been hit twice fron behind in the last 4 years, (on my bike), stopping at orange lights - once in Parramatta and once at Town Hall. Never in my car, although I've been tooted and abused several times for stopping at an orange light on those occasions.
I still believe car drivers expect bike riders to be a little 'wild'. Everytime I ride sensibly - leave a space for an indicating car to pull in, stop at orange lights etc... it just confuses them.
I agree with just charging us all an extra $250 a year, then maybe they could spend time targetting the lane hoggers, tail riders, drug effected etc... Unfortunately that's the majority of the people, and their objection to the tax rise to allow the cops to target a wider variety of dangerous driving, would be political suicide.
My record: 2002 (10 months) 15 tickets and should have been more as surprisingly let off about 4 times. 2003 was 8 tickets. 2005 2 tickets and 2006 no tickets (no tickets since March 2005, and got my NSW licence in September 2005, which is still clean. No more money from me, the sods!
hey Busgo just noticed your post as well - I wasn't breaking the law mate, that's the thing.....
unless driving through an orange light at the speed limit is breaking the law?
Yeh they want invisable camers now because the drivers are slowing down at the camera and then speed up after them. How fuckin brilliant are these road safe people. These c******* run our traffic system. Cheers,
Kawasuki
Thats just it Paul, unless there is someone following close behind, you are required to stop at an orange light, not accelerate to get through it.
Even if you are doing under the speed limit. I suspect that the cop saw that you accelerated instead of preparing to stop, which is almost the equivalent of running a red light.
You are quite correct to carry on through an orange light if you are in danger of being rear ended but otherwise you are required to stop.
Ride safely and ride longer mate.

Thats funny - I remember it being stated that if it turns yellow or orange that you are to move through the intersection as quickly as possible.
Now of course if your 50m off & hit the gas to make it through - well yeah thats a given - but if your say 10 ~ 20 - instead of hitting the skids I would get my way through the lights.
My reasons for this include:
Hitting front breaks for orange/yellow lights where its known there is a build up of oil & crap on the road can be very bad.
if its wet I'll do this for sure!!
I have heard many times of car drivers expecting a rider to go through them & have nearly hit them - in a lot of cases - the rider has been hit "Busa riders always count in three's.... 100, 200, 300"
