Well Raz and I are not prepared to put any more work into the new test forum until we know it is going to happen.
All of the changes and transfer is possible.
We have had little feedback to the forum on this board so until we get something from your good selves , Richard or Volvi then that is the end of it.
You can't say that you didn't have the opportunatey to have qualified people help with the transfer.
THE END.
Cheers,
Pete

DJ I have no idea which board is better so i think it comes down to which board is easier to maintain and work on(to keep the club working) rather than which one has prettier colours(which is the only technical support i could offer when it comes to IT) so if the new test one is easier to keep working and has less issues lets go for it if not why not stay here? id offer to help but the only thing id be able to do is fetch the beer and that would only work if you wanted a vacation in sunny townsville(my doors open) so DJ if you choose to come to townsville to do it ill start pondering the best delivery system for the beer MM Racing is up for sale!! get your bids in now before its to late. MM Racing-The team name garunteed to get you laid!
Yeah im a bit like Dan,i have no idea how these things work, but if you think the new system is easier to manage and a better system, then go for it.
The Phantom is back
G'day
The less capable of us reckon that you clever blokes are able to make these decisions on our behalf :-)
And we'll go with the flow...I cannot tell if the nuances of alternative sites are beneficial or better or bullshit...

Kevin
Well I had me a play on the new forum and I hope that the amount of background work isn't going to place to much of a strain of the moderators of the board. OK trying to roll out a new version of anything is painful let alone trying to get opinions. I am just preparing to roll out a new version of a design package across Queensland which is going to be interesting considering the test load took 45 minutes!!!! Ok so what was I chirpping on about??? Oh yeah, as long as it is easy to use I think everyone will be happy and if not, stiff biccies. Salutations

Ok I'll try to add my view on this topic. There are so many angles and issues Im not sure if I will cover them all, but I will try.
I dont think Richard is to keen because he would work on the premise 'if it aint broken, dont try and fix it'. I hold to that view to up to an extent. But in truth it doesnt depend on Volvi and Richard alone, we dont own it as such. But perhaps bearing the responsibility of it coz we have for so long. As you know I started the club with the help of Peter Lee and busababy many years ago. PL doesnt involve himself with the board and bb no longer is a regular here. Richard came on board some 6 months later after I left a note on a busa I saw in the city letting the owner know of the existance of the club.
The current board has been operational for quite some years now. It certainly aint the best or the fanciest but does the job and is by now well known and linked elsewhere in many places.
Moving always carries its risks too. Though my personal feeling is that ezyboard isnt the right host in the longterm. Especially if considering the need for the board may exist for 20 yrs or more for future users. The cost of ezyboard is more expensive then most of us believe. I havent been involved in its financing Richard has taken care of that through the sale of club T shirts and proceeds held in account for this board. But now t shirts are taken care by vendors so income will not really be forthcoming. However....
Perhaps were approaching all this arse end first ie chat board. Maybe its a viable homepage with advertising revenue that shud be a first consideration and thereafter the chat brd.
Either way DJ whilst I truly appreciate all your efforts in the test forum, I dont think this is a venture to just jump into coz youve done what can be done with the test brd.
I have a feeling that whilst many would not necessarily object to a move........eventually. Yet as you noted many havent exactly signed up on the test brd and left feedback indicating of sorts - well im ok where I am, at least for now.
Maybe just as an idea we can discuss our future and where we want it to go at our meet in Jindabyne by all members present. Im all for active participation by all in our future.
Anyway, Im sure I wouldnt have covered all the angles but hilited a few. So thats my input for now.

Hi DJ. Though I think most of us take the existence of the board for granted, the lack of feedback isn't necessarily that members don't care or don't have an opinion, but that they don't know what feedback to give other than, "it looks okay"...
I also had a look at the new board today and I feel I don't understand enough to comment beyond the "it works okay" thoughts. I'm also happy to leave it to those that understand more to make the decisions.
I think it's worth discussing at Jindy, before the heavy drinking begins!
"sometimes crime does pay"
If the bloke that repairs the problems with this site says that it is broken, then it's broken. The end.
So who paid for and doesn't want to waist their "ezSupporter" membership
I would like to thank DJ and RAZ for giving a shit about the prospect of moving forward and improving the facilities (or e-facilities if you prefer). Top stuff gents. Fantastic that you were willing to put in so much work. I hope that you have an oppertunity to showcase your hard work on a more permanent basis.
ONWARDS AND UPWARDS Cheers,
Holge
PS look at our current bandwidth usage thats about 7 gig a month, I dont know what rates sites are but that seems alot of bandwidth, the last thing we would like to happen is the board is in-accesable because "you have exceeded your bandwidth". Something that has to be considered too.
Well done Raz and DJ.. Its good to see that a couple of guys are willing to give it a go to see where it leads.
Personally I wouldnt be talking 10 to 20 years. Those numbers have come up a couple of times, not just in these sets of posts. Anyone in the industry knows how fast things move. People outside of the industry wonder how we can work on one thing forever.. I can tell you that we have spent 5 years with 10 developers (not including other IT staff) changing the software in our business, everyday there is something new to do. We consider PC's chuck out items every 3 years because of the change of hardware and software needs.. If your next forum lasts 5 years without a change, that is long term.
The current forum in regards to functionality doesnt bother me. Have had lots of experiance giving people new funk ways of doing things which most times they use 20% of because they dont understand.. in our secure site we used tabs and our clients didnt understand that they can click on them to change pages..
Regardless of how long the site has been here, or how long it has been here or the functionality provided (you can type in topics and text and stick in some pictures, what more do you need).. the thing that is lacking is data security.. In our business if an IT persons forgets a backup of data, or the hardware isnt working and someone doesnt make more than enough effort to fix it, they are dismissed on the spot.. The forum may not contain financial tax data or anything, but it is precious to some... The key first should be the data security.. If that is fine.. i.e everything is backed up nightly, then why change.. if its not, then that would be good enough reason for me to change forums or hosts regardless of other functionality.
If we dont have data security then its time to change.. If we do, leave it alone.
Thats my long 2 cents.
I've used this board for 5 odd years with no problems DJ
What are the problems that you keep having & why are they bad enough to want you to pull the plug on this place Maybe it's just the shitty computer you are using
I reckon that test thing looks the same as all the rest of them......cheap
Quote:everything is backed up nightly, then why change.. if its not, then that would be good enough reason for me to change forums or hosts regardless of other functionality.
Well thats one of the probs we don't have the data.
At present we can get the posts across but that took around 5 hrs to get to the other site. We can back up our own old and future data with a new forum.
Has everyone forgotten how many posts we lost not that long ago??
Thanks for the tip Rev...Now where is the start button again on this Amstrad?? Cheers,
Pete

Like many of the other members, I really do appreciate the effort that you guys have gone to on behalf of the club.
I have worked in IT for most of my career in a host of roles.
Your biggest challenge to get a change of forum host is "user acceptance" and in most members opinions, it doesn't appear to be a problem and therefore they will be reluctant to move.
Volvi also made a very crucial point about links and pointers on other websites that bring people to our site. As you know DJ, those hyperlinks will all be broken unless you do some diversion tactics.
I have liked the look and feel of this site since day 1 and although it takes a little getting used to for a new member, I prefer it to any other BUSA sites that I have visited.
Having said that, if a decision is made by the majority of members in attendance at Jindy to make the move, I will be happy to go along with whatever the outcome is.
Like I said in the other thread, if you can get both boards going and mirror the input from one to the other, (YES it is a big ask but if I was a business owner, I would insist), then you could phase out the old board over a period and do a cold cut to the new board on a set date.
Companies pay big bucks for this type of service and I would not expect you guys to work your guts out for the love of the club unless you have a passion for what you are doing.
If the club wants to follow the path that I have just suggested you will eventually move to a new host with minimal loss of supporters.
I would be quite happy to donate a fee towards your efforts.
Once again, you have done a great job on this forum over the last couple of years DJ and I for one, really appreciate the effort.
