Cheap project bike???
#1
Hi all,

Was hoping to get some ideas, but I'm thinking about getting a cheap project bike which I can restore/modify and turn into a fun Sunday ride. I like the cafe recent style builds an was thinking of doin something similar.... Basically I want to start with a good base though, I figured some of you old blokes would know of a good bike to start with Pi_tongue

After something with a big bore motor as I'm a fairly large fella so needs to drag me along :)

Thanks in advance. Biker

I wanted something similar as a project too......

Cheap ? Tough ? Big ? Plenty of go ?
Easy to work on and hot up ?

You've just discribed a Mk1 "oilcooled" Bandit 1200.

Mine came with a fairing but I did a Renthal bar's / SV headlight /
better mirrors conversion. Owes me waaay under $3K. Cheap fun!

Nice!! That's the sort of thing I'm thinking... Had a bit of a look on bikesales and couldn't seem to find anything under 4k.

Keen to try and find something cheap to start with and then build it up from there.

Folk still seem to be holding out for silly money
but if you wait and watch and do some homework
there are still bikes at sensible prices.

I bought the Bandit a while back, a week before Xmas
and it had a really poor ad on Ebay. No one bid.
Owner brought it to Brissy from Warwick for $50 too!

I bought my GSX1100ET for similar money from
a guy on ASF. Lots of waiting, lots of looking.

Im a Suzuki man, so I normaly look out for...

Light damage Gen1's,
GSX1400,
Bandit Mk1/Mk2 both oil-cooled,
GSX1100....ET/EX/Kat/EF/SD/etc

All a safe bet.

zx 14 go pretty cheap for the bike they are, esp with the release of the new one now , the old will be less valued
Talking to a guy on the weekend that paid 4K for an 08 that needed a replacement subframe and some panel parts

I had a ZX12R to play with last year.
Was told I could keep it for $5,500 ovno.
Didnt bother, but it was pretty clean and went OK for the money.

Sold now, but they are about.

For me its the "EF" Suzuki, yep, Im Old Skool!!

Cheap enough, you can still find runners which are under $3K, Engines are Strong and are accepting to Extreem Engine Modifications, and they look as Tuff as F#$K!!

Yes. Was on my list posted above.
Never owned one......yet!
Last of the aircooled GSX's, bigger carb's and CC's etc
but I was never a fan of the 16" front wheel but thats
fixable.

Great bikes....

Any '80s GSX1100 would do, but I reckon you couldn't go past a Katana. Plenty around, but getting a bit hard to find cheap though.

I'm loving my little GB600, (in the member photos section) but if you're on the large size you'd look a bit out of sorts on it.
