Fuel Guage only read Half
#1
The fuel guage on my 2000 only reads half way. once the fuel gets below half the guage starts reading normal & goes down as the fuel goes down. But when i fill the tank the guage only goes up to halfway & stays there until the fuel gets down to half a tank again.
Any ideas???

My 2001 model now sold did this for a few months.
Not sure what caused it or how it righted itself but it did eventually.

Did you pull out your sensor/float thingy? I did the same to mine ages ago, it snags on a breather if you dont put it back in right. just pull it back out and make sure you dont foul it up putting it back it.

Its been like this since i bought it from the original owner. I will have a look & see if it helps to pull it out & put it back in.
That means i have to drain the tank doesnt it? if so then i might wait till the tank is almost empty.

Not only do you have to drain the tank, you will have to refill it to see if it you have reinserted it correctly, and if you havent, empty and refill again.
Good luck with it, it is a pain in the arse.

Had the same problem on my wife's Harley. I pulled out the float device and had to clean the contacts so they conducted properly as the float level moved.
This is easily cleaned with a soft pencil eraser.

Dont B0ther to drain the tank unless you are clumsy, having removed my fuel pump assembly more than once I just turn the tank upside down, the pump/fuel gauge is on the bottom.
Be aware it is very heavy full,I repeat It is very heavy full.
have something soft to place the tank on,I also leave my tank cover on to prevent scratches.

Yeah I was thinking about just turning it upside down & placing it on a rag to protect it as well as absorb any fuel that may leak from filler cap. I dont know that much about them but i thought the pump was outside the tank, well if it is indeed inside the tank then id like to know what the unit is that the filter is housed inside?

On the 99-2001 the pump is on the outside, from then on it is an internal pump.

I think its only the 99 & 2000 with the external fuel pump ,2001 is internal .
