Stator enquiry. Info required pls

As some of you may know, my bike died last week. It turns out that the stator has died. I have two questions for the knowledgeable guru's in here:

A- What is a stator? (I believe that it is part of the alternator, but I know little else)

B - What would cause it to die?

The bike has just clocked over 3000 k's, so I am surprised by it, but my attempt is to know more about it.

Its the wire windings that make up the centre of the alternator , usually last a long time unless physically damaged, or a fault in assembly.
Should be a simple warranty fix with no future probs. <i></i>

Thanks for that Maj. The repairs are being covered by warranty, but I was not sure what the stator was and why it would die so quickly.
