Usually the fan blades melt and a drip of plastic hardens and stops them turning , see if the blades spin, you can initiate the fan by bridging the fan switch terminals on the left rear of the radiator , just pop the plug off and put a straightened paper clip or wire across the terminals

If the temp went up that quick I would look in the water pump or thermostat area for a problem, sounds like theres no coolant flow.

Check how hot the radiator is, if its only warm them check above. be carefull not to burn yourself.

thanks leonard, fan seems to be kicking in fine i rode i turned it on this morning and gauge was in the red, turned it off again and it returned to the cold position, rode it to and from work today with no problems, the bike has warp speed rad guards on it and by the looks of it not a lot of air gets through them, ill remove them during the hot months and keep a close eye on things.
thanks for yr advice
