Dyno Tune Recommendations?
#1
I've been convinced to go the PCIII/air filter and dyno tune route and I'm after any recommendations. I've been referred to a guy in Bathurst but I'd rather go somewhere closer if possible - however I have also heard a few stories about dodgey tunes and dyno ripoffs so I'm a bit weary.
1) Anyone recommend a tuner? How much did it cost?
2) To TRE or not to TRE? That seems to be a valid question re the K8 - don't care about the fact it eliminates the top speed limiter, just interested in any gains the timing changes make to performance. Seems they are not so dramatic on the K8?
3) Been quoted $450 local price for PCIII - too much? I know they are cheaper from someone in the US like FuelMoto but I'd like a warranty and hence a local distributor if the price is closer.

I have Yoshi slip-on TRC cans, and I know many say the PCIII isn't needed but I'm going to play it safe and go with my mechanics advice.

honestly mate its not worth the $450 for the pc plus another couple hundred to tune it jsut for slip ons. there are people around running a full system no pc and there air/fuel is ok so yours with the restrictive stock headers will be fine. if your determined to tune it wait till someone cracks the busa ecu and then get them to tune it for a couple hundred save your self almost 500 bucks.

Cheers Dan, that was my impression but my mechanic got me worried as he does seem to know his stuff. Has anyone done an A/F reading with the TRCs or similar slip-on setup to mine here in Oz with our crappy fuel to confirm?

Simmo has the yoshi full system and has a wide band A/F meter on his bike and he reckons its ok. maybe talk to him. i had slip ons on my first gen 1 with no tune and it was actually still running rich with the factory tune in it. i know Tex has a full tiforce system and no pc and his A/F numbers seemed ok from what he said. honestly mate i wouldnt waste that sorta cash just for slip ons they wont have that much of an effect. if it was a full system id say do it jsut to get the maximum benefit out of the pipe but with how restrictive the stock headers are i would think the slip ons make much difference to your fueling

Hey Dan - in regards to these people, is their AFR safe when under wide open throttle? (question not rhetorical).

Paranoia and lack of available information about AFR under WOT were some of the reasons I bought a PC3 and had a dynotune.

i can only go on what they told me and i believe Simmo's was around the 13:1 under WOT he said he had a lean spot at slight throttle position at low rpm and that was it i believe. Tex said his A/F was good and he tunes bikes everyday and is happy to run his without a pc at the moment i think. i could only guess that with more restriction there would be richer readings from jsut slipons.

if you get warranty & they will look after you go for it.
The only thing I have found with out PC3 you may be running lean around 2500-3,500rpm I have just fitted a TRE on mine but not tested it yep, it may run richer thinking its in 5th gear all the time will post results when tested.
When someone cracks the code for the K8 we all can run with out the PC3 then we can have our K8 ECU tuned that will be a real good thing Pi_thumbsup

To elaborate on Simmo's comments, you can't directly claim warranty if you purchase from USA. I have some mates in USA who I can hopefully ship it back to and have them claim warranty on my behalf if anything ever goes wrong. (provided there aren't anly loopholes about invoicing address or whatever).

But I paid around AU$260 for mine delivered from the states. I took the gamble of no warranty and so far it's paid off. (knock on wood).

Many thanks guys...I guess the definitive answer would be to just go and get a dyno and A/F reading done as is and see what the results are first. Like TimF I'm a bit paranoid after what my mechanic said, but hey, the workshop is selling and installing PCIIIs so they have a vested interest. WOT is the worry it seems, the ECU smarts down low seems to correct A/F well enough for my setup from what I have read.

Yeah exactly and you also have to determine the accuracy of comments made by people who are trying to validate their purchase of a PC3 by convincing everyone else to buy one.

I haven't seen any of that sort of mis-information on this site, but I have on others.

Hey Gav I've got a 4-2-1 full Yoshie system on my K8 and the bike appears to be running very well and there has been no impact on fuel consumption with the standard ECU.
The fellars on this website have been very helpful about this topic in other threads so take on board what they are saying.

Over here in the West I've had a couple of bike shops that sell the PC111's tell that run the bike on the dyno 1st to confirm what the AF Ratios are like the guys have mentioned, I haven't done this yet but hoping to in the next few weeks.

I would certainly follow the advice that the guys have offered find out what the bike is doing them decide on what course of action is required if any.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Been hassling you a bit lately and thought I'd give you a break - until the carbon fibre stuff gets here, that is lol.
Thanks again for all the input guys, I was sceptical of my mechs advice and thanks for confirming.

For 50 bucks you should be able to find someone to do a WOT dyno run. Ask that they print out the a/f as well as hp &t orque. Peace of mind!
