Did you sign with Shannons last year?
#1
I know this should be in the insurance postings, but i want to save other Shannons customers some grief....

When I took on Shannons as my insurer for the busa in January last year the premium was $740.00 - wh9ich was consierably more than the $400 for the 02 Bandit 1200 I had just sold.

Anyway - the Shannons policy overall was better than most so I went with it, in January this year I received the renewal from them and the premium had gone to $920.55

Bollocks to that, so i started doing the rounds of the quotes and ended up going with Arista over 40 as I'd had my 40th in December - doesnt have the same inclusions but I couldn't argue with $670.00

I had to pay it upfront, but for $300 it was worth it.

Checking my bank statements today showed that Shannons were still taking their money every month, so i got the policy out and in the FINE PRINT down the bottom was "If we dont hear from you we will assume blah blah andwe will continue to deduct your premium blah blah.

This is the first time I have seen this, every other insurance I've had you have to notify them if you want to continue every year - got on the blower and faxed a copy of my new policy with Arista has it sorted.

They said that normally they manually adjust every policy on a yearly basis and the most they are allowed to increase it is 10% pa - but mine was increased by the computer.

Last year was their first insuring bikes and they have paid out quite a number of Hayabusa claims hence the increased premium - he said that next year it will probably increase again as they had set their premiums too low in the first year and they weren't expecting to insure as many bikes as they did.

So when your Shannons comes up make sure you cancel it if you are going with another company

Cheers Ruffy

That's the norm with most direct debits payments that come up for renewal.
I have had the same problem with a Gym membership. I had to put it in writing, Blah Blah

well i was insured the first 2 yrs of my busa even as the premium went up 2nd yr but then went up again for 3rd yr. This was arista. Bottom line I told them to get f****d, rating 1 no claims and premium just keeps going up, keep your fuking insurance. I havent insured my bike since. As far as Im concerned all insurance are pure rip off merchants. I know when something goes bad you want them, but Im taking my chances f*** em all is what I say. And what really ticks my goat is the GST component ontop of stamp duty, not to mention brokerage fees. f*** em all the young the short and the tall..........yea that was a pommie song.

A lot of people suspected that Shannons was doing a honeymoon price just to get people to sign up and that renewals would be a shock. Just another marketing ploy. Well, I reckon they were right. The older I get, the better I was. Regards.... Rob

not in my name mate I'm just a secondary rider

I should add, it will be fully insured under my name but not until i've had a chance to get it painted and then souce a company that wont charge a 26yo half the cost of the bike to insure it. Technically my boss is the primary rider which he agreed to, since as my car is off the road at the moment the bike is my only transport and he didn't want me riding un-insured which has helped me out immensley Arista will insure someone under 40, its just if you are 40+ you get better rates etc Edited by: Maggot1300 at: 8/3/07 22:39

Mine is insured but I see that as protection against theft or write off, or for if somehow my bike does some extreme damage to a ferrari I may have been riding beside at the time. Any fix less than the excess + about $1.5k I wouldnt bother claiming.

I stacked my zx-12r and wrote it off. Even then, 12 months old with 30k on the odo, worked out better for me to sell the wreck (engine went side car racing) than it would have been to claim the insurance.

On the plus side, I dont worry to much about parking my bike in the street when I want to go somewhere an all those things as a new replacement for 2 years if it gets written off or stolen. At 32 years old, that does cost me $1400 a year. I guess im used to paying it because of the cars etc ive had though.

Shannons wouldnt insure me though.. pffffft Rating 1, No claims, no speeding fines in last 6 years (had to pull my head in) just because i didnt have bike insurance in last 6 months.
