Turbo engine temperature

What temperature should a turbo engine run at and at what actual temp should the fan cut in??.

I have my stock busa fan (muzzy blade) activated by the original thermostat. The thermostat is now locatedon the right hand side of the bike in the radiator return hose as the original location is covered by the turbo up-pipe. The stock fan now activates at about 107deg c and holds the temp ok at idle. With the thermostat now fitted to the return line wouldnt it be activating earlier as its reading the hot water from the motor whereas in its original location it reads cooler water near the radiator outlet. Do I need to fit a hotter thermostat so that the fan activates at the original actual temp???

I have also fitted a GSXR1000 fan (muzzy blade) to the radiator and the Motec is set to activate this at 110 deg c.

What are the normal operating temperatures for a motor or how hot can it get before the oil is damaged.

I have a cut down oil cooler but cannot find anywhere to fit it as the turbo takes up all of the room up front. May have to resort to fitting it behind the rear shock with its own fan, dont like the idea of the oil not being directly cooled.

Mines a little different yours Bruce but the bike has been no different as far as running temperatures and havent seen a need to do anyhting extra other than the muzzy blade which cuts in as per standard.

Well that wasnt much help now was it, LOL

Bruce I will let you know when mine finally fires up as I will be running the same set up as you have and I do believe Greg told me that the fan would switch on about 10 degrees earlier being set up this way

let me know what you come up with

I wonder if that 10 degrees earlier will mean that the thermofan will stay on longer. I need to find out at what temp it activates so looks like a meter and a pot of boiling water to see. At least I'll be able to check the calibration of my dash if I know exactly what temp the thermo activates.

Another question:
If I mount the oil cooler at the back of the bike will the frictional losses of pumping the oil thru 2mtrs of braided line affect oil pressure and supply to the motor????

when you had the motor built did you put in high volume oil pump or did ya stay with stock have you looked at mounting the oil cooler under the nose near the headlight somewhere

I have seen Coolers still run on Turbos, but not so often. I will see if I can dig up a photo.

Not sure if its a good idea plumbing it to the back, as you say pressure might be an issue and I dont think you want to bother with an Oil Pump!

thanks mate tried it there and wont fit, turbo is in the way especiallly with the front lowered.

Temps would have to be very high Bruce before the oil was damaged from heat , like no water left in the motor , if you have concerns just change the oil a little more frequently.
I prefer having no oil cooler as the cooler bypasses the filter , seen several guys on this board with total motor rebuilds because of a clutch fault putting bits thru the bearings. if the oil cooler was removed the filter would stop most of this untill it was blocked.

Simple solution ,switch to methanol , no need for radiator fan ,no need for oil cooler ,prolly no need for a radiator Pi_tongue

I can,t see why an engine with 8:1 compression would run hot in traffic if stock is 11:1?Perhaps an electric oil pump or electric water pump to circulate water or oil thru the turbo on shutdown combined with a thermo fan?

turbo won't make it run hotter. standard cooling system works perfect.

They are all going to get hot in traffic regardless of the comp ratio. With little airflow through the radiator and a teeny fan operating on only part of the radiator the feeling of doing the splits on a bbq will come to all who wait.
