Drag racing seat
#1
I'm not sure if there is much interest out there, but I'm part way through making a seat for drag racing. The idea is to remove the standard hump and front seat, then replace both with a one piece unit that pushes the bum forward and is as low as you can get a piece of fibreglass over the standard front seat area. This is all Blackzooks fault for pointing out I don't sit far enough forward!
No padding, but I guess you could add a bit.
Very hard to put a price on it, but I've been quoted around $250 to $300 to make a proper mould from which good seats can be made. After the basic seat is made, I'd have to put together some brackets to fit the existing clamp arrangements. Just need the key to remove it (I don't use the front screws).
So I think it's going to end up around $300 min each.
If there's any interest, then I can go ahead and make proper moulds. If not enough interest, it will end up a one-off!
This is part way through shaping

This is just about final shape.

I know I'm still looking for a good race seat, I was going to

get one in from the U.S but I don't really need a race hump as

I already have one. But what you have there looks the goods

so keep us informed to how it works out. I do like the idea

Shayne, I told you where to get it made!
If you had of used Terry, you would have had it back inside of 2 weeks.

Yeah I know, it was the fear of losing it in the post that stopped me!

All will be good in the end!

Shayne,
I intended to buy one of yours to incorporate it into this seat, but in the end got stuck into it.
For big guys, it's probably not much value, as the normal hump is good enough. The other plus for me is that I will put my racing numbers etc on this hump and can be back to standard in a few minutes. Was going to use the original front bolts but will now use the same system as the hump to locate the front edge (putting a 6mm bar across where the bolts go in).
All good fun I guess!

Cut it all up and re-built it with about 30mm more arse room. Should fit more riders now!
It's in the final stages of preparation ready for a mould to be made. Since the local guy is on holidays, I will make a mould myself. Saves $250!!!

Looks like a great idea and may not be too bad for the road either.

My 72 Laverda had a moulded fibreglass seat and it was really comfortable on the highway with minimal padding.

Not sure if I'll bother with a seat pad. If anything, it will be just a show job. ie maybe a few mm of foam under some vinyl. The problem is how to finish the back edge neatly, and where on the hump do you finish it off? Still, hope to be able to play around soon. Should have the mould done this weekend, and then maybe produce the prototype seat next week sometime for trial. Putting all the bracketry in will take a while.
My arse has enough padding, so any extra is just for show really.

Just a clue on the brackets Bear.
The Laverda brackets were added by simply adding a couple of extra layers of fibreglass over them.
They were made of very thin flat bar and shaped to fit the underside of the seat. You could probably do the same with flat aluminium.
