Spirit of Tasmania question
#1
G'day all, off to Tassie soon. It's not my fist trip there on a bike but my first on the Busa. Has anyone recently sailed over with their Busa, as I need to know how they are securing the bikes these days. Do they tie down over the seat or by the bars?

I ask this because I don't want my fairings rubbed with tie down straps. Would it be better if I purchased my own tie downs, those jiggers that come off the clip ons if you know what I mean. And if you know the ones I'm talking about could you let me know where I can get them.

Cheers Rich

I have taken my Busa over twice on the Spirit. Take a thick towel to put over the seat to make sure it doesn't scratch the paint work. They tie it down over the seat and the best way is to leave the bike in first gear, so that it does not roll foward or backwards with the movement of the ship and Bass Strait can get pretty rough. The other thing I did was to put duck tape on the front brake, pulling it on, to ensure the bike didn't move forward. I have seen other people take tie downs for the handle bars etc. Not necessary. I've taken bikes over 4 times and never had a problem. The guys that do it on the ship, do it on a daily basis and they know what they are doing. I always watched them to make sure that the belts they put on don't scratch the bike, but I never had a problem. Just be careful when you are riding inside the ship as the floor can get slippery with oil dropped from cars and being steel (the floor of the ship) you can end up on your arse very quickly if you are not careful. Good luck. The roads in Tassie are a bikers heaven. You will have a great time.

Rich they have recently revised there tie down procedure and now use the across the bar type method. The across the seat was letting to many go. they are usually pretty good and the guys will even let you watch / help with the tie down procedure. Have seen a few go down on most trips, but they were pretty rough conditions. Found one of our R1's from the group under a 4x4 on the way home last time
In saying that though have done the trip over a half dozen times and never a scratch and one hell of a ride.
Enjoy ..................when are you going ? weather and time of the year is pretty important for a Tassie ride ?

just one thing to consider is when arriving in tassie, be VERY carefull as you ride out of the ship, the tail gate is usually wet and i saw a bike drop and ruin the fairings. fortunately, most of the damage was done to his ego as everyone behind watched. lucky he had oggy knobs

G'day all, thanks for the replies. I have done the trip a couple of times now just not on the Busa. With my Road King there was never an issue tying it down. I'm well aware of how greasy the deck gets.

Born and bred in Tassie, know all the roads. My local roads back then included the Scottsdale Sidling, St Marys Pass and the Elephant Pass.

Going in late Jan early Feb
