A thought on combating the price of petrol
#1
Hi everybody,

There have been many ideas thrashed around on the internet or on our local TV about forcing oil companies to reduce the cost of petrol, from not buying it at all, to boycotting on certain days.

When you observe petrol station prices there is no difference between the big 4 (Mobil, Shell, Caltex and BP) That means that they are all anti competitive, even though the ACCC doesnt give a damn (Probably on the take, like Johnny Howard ) There is also an unwritten accord between the oil companies that keeps the prices pretty much even across the board (Read "The Seven Sisters") So what's the idea.

Simple really, dont bother with the boycotting on 1 day or that crap. Just pick an oil company, like Shell for example, and dont buy your gas from them at all. If everybody in the club told their friends to avoid that particular oil company and this was spread around, then the oil company concerned would have to reduce the price of fuel or go broke.

Then if they make a significant change, ie back to $1.00 a litre across the board from $1.39 that it is now, then we all buy from them and let the others suffer the chill.

Only problem in this is that we would all have to work together. Not bad for anarchy theory is it, but worthwhile for discussion I think.

Kawa Shell is now Coles (for some reason they get realy up set if you call them Shell)
I have a contact's in Bp, Caltex & Mobil the trouble is we would need many 1,000's of riders / Drivers to make a differance somehow I don't think its going to happen. Why should they are all making a killing so is the goverment they are making the most money with all their taxes

Cheers Robert

I suggest that if we as a group organise those we know and target one of the big 4 it may or may not make a difference. If we do nothing, there will be no difference. The different outcomes being related to the amount of effort involved. Does anyone want to make a difference, if we can - or just keep sitting back and contnue to be f****d up the arse by the petrol companies?

I spoke to a guy who ran a servo for years. He explained to me how most of our fuel comes from tassie and costs about 8-10 dollars a barrel to produce. It is then tariffed up by the goverment to world oil prices. It is then taxed on refinement and then taxed at the bowser.About 80% of the petrol price is tax.The oil companies make big money on the retrieval and refinement of the oil and claim a small loss on the distribution. They then claim their not making money on their fuel. Those who make the laws make the money as always.

Even the U.S is catching up with more realistic prices. Oil is cheap when you consider it's price rise in relation to inflation from say, the 70s onwards. It's cheaper than milk.

I come from the UK where they're paying about $2.20 a litre, and did bring the country to a standstill a few years back by picketing the depots and convincing the drivers not to cross the pickets, but it's stil $2.20 a litre despite that success.

Fuel consumption is not much to worry about when riding a bike compared to cars, so I'm not too bothered. What pees me off is anti-bike attitude and holding back alternative fuels. It's a scarce resource made worse by India and China's recent energy demands, so we need to have the alternative fuels invested in now.

Hi everybody,

Interesting debate. I agree about the taxes and that is a separate issue. Also who has the bigger lobbying power for tax releif, I bet you the Big 4 have much more lobbying power than we the average voter who only gets to exercise democracy for 30 seconds every 4 years.

But there always seems to be excuses made for the stuff to go up in price. In New Zealand the price of petrol is $1.70 per litre. I had to fill up a BA Falcon rental car, and all I can say about that is ouch!!! It was well over $100 for the fill.

I agree with Max, the time for sitting here and taking it up the arse is over. My household runs 2 cars and a motorcycle, the neighbours runs 5 cars and 3 cars respectively. That's 10 cars that wont be buying shell. Now if everybody in the Hayabusa Club could influence 10 vehicles, and so on, there would be a groundswell.

So I am going to boycott Shell (Coles) along with Kawa and Max, and see how many want to come on board. Regards

Thats why I suggested Shell, then we can have the gas we want and make a statement at the same time. So who is in!!! Just tell your mates to stop using Shell.

Currently in Melbourne, emails going round (like chain letters)
suggesting we all boycott Caltex as they are apparently the biggest distributer.
Sounds good to me

I only use Caltex or BP anyway. The only time I'll use Shell or Mobil is if I'm stuck in a little town with only one servo & the fuel light is on. Then I'll just put enough in to get me to the next major town. Wazza.
