A good quality helmet that fits you properly.

The more $$$$ you spend the better quality helmet you will get BUT as Kendo says it has to fit your head properly. My bulbous head means a lot of helmets don't fit properly, including the expensive good brands.

You can start by using this site for comparisons....

Some people say the sites crap but I found it a good starting point

On my last trip to Sydney I used those moulded wax type ear plugs. They were the only type that stayed in and sealed well. Get them for a few dollars from a chemist shop. Made a big difference and still able to hear traffic sounds etc without issue.

The price of the helmet has got zero to do with it.
I paid $850 for a top of the line Shoei and it was no better than the $200 cheap helmet i upgraded from.
I stayed with it for 4 years trying to convince myself it must be better, just recently bought a rjays helmet for $250 and it is heaps better than the Shoei.
Ask other riders for real life experince's is probably the best recommendation.

When I bought the Busa I also bought a Shoei ($700 worth) Turns out that it is more of a race helmet. Great ventilation but is like riding in a force nine gale as far as noise goes!

I also now own a $120 RJay and that has cut noise down by at least 40%. But I still wear plugs on long trips.
From what I am gleaming from guys I know who tour a lot (5000km round trips) the best at reducing noise are well fitting tour helmets, Some come pre equiped with the head sets. these are desinged to be worn all day (without ear plugs) without causing headaches.

The BMW helmets are supposed to be very good, altho very expencive!!

I've had a HJC fairly loud when you start pushing it.gone to Shark 1 cause it fitted my head the best ,and 2 found them reasonable quiet right across a lot of different riding conditions.from around town to highway track use.3 the last bouns is that shark have their own head set system that fits in to most of there range so you can blue tooth in tunes iPod/phone ,gps and if need be answer the phone hands free and also talk to your passenger as well
