Under Pressure

Richard, is that the first time they've been checked since Phillip Island? cos you know they lowered the pressures on the day don't you? to about 27 front and rear. still don't know why

I knew they lowered them, but I didn't realise it was that much! And yes, given that I had that period without the bike, it may be the first time I have checked since then...

I presume, then, that you upped yours again after the day, or have you left them where they dropped them to?

That is race pressure. The more air in your tyres, the harder they are. This leads to increased longevity of the tyre. Less air in the tyre increases the surface area of the rubber on the road (therefore increasing traction), but they payoff is far greater wear.

Yeah Richard I did reinflate them a dayor 2 later, but I'v ehad a new rear fitted since then anyway, that dayat the Island really tortured what was already a fairly worn (but still legal) tyre.

Rightly or wrongly, I find 42 front and back, the best all around for feel and not over steering.

I ran my original tyres at 42/42 and got quite reasonable mileage, but I found the 207 behaved a bit better at slightly lower pressure, so I run them at 39/39.

Hopefully, I will still get the good mileage I had on the OEM's but it already does not look promising.

Has anyone found the same?

I ran my last set of 207s at 38/38 and got GREAT feeling out of them, but only got 2000kms before they were rooted. This time I'm trying 42/42 (listening to someone for a change) and I've found great increased longevity of the tyre, but a lot less grip in tight situations. Not sure what the answer is yet.

I rode a mate's bus with Pilots on it. What TOP tyres! That is what I am getting next time AND he got great wear (and he rides hard).

P.S. Hope everyone had a lovely new years. Anyone come up for Summernats?

you are right about the tyre grip and feel heidi, but i'm surprised you only got 2,000 k's at 38/38 you must really give it a hiding, i run mine at 40/40 and get around 7-8,000 or 10,000 if you dont mind some canvass,,

haven't tried the pilots yet, maybe on my next bike,,

cheers

2,000 kms from a tyre? I seem to recall in an article in one of the magazines doing a test ride on the Busa that they got about 3,000 kms from a new tyre. Now I'm sure these guys gave the bike an absolute caning and I'm know they're damn sure better riders than I, so I don't know what the hell you're doing to get only 2,000 kms out of a tyre but since the bike's still rubber-side down you must be one hell of a rider. When do you start riding for Honda in the 500cc GPs???

Apparently I'm too hard on the throttle coming out of corners. I got into trouble for it last Superbike School. This tears the guts out of a tyre far more than straight line speed. Guess we all ride differently.

Yeah I guess we do. I was pretty hard on the throttle at the last Superbike School I did, not enough to get into trouble, and I did manage to chunk the tyre up, but I dont' do a lot of riding like that. In fact that's the only time I've had the bike on a track. As long as you can afford a new tyre every 3 weeks I guess you shouldn't be too bothered.

Foolishly, I have not checked my tyre pressure for a while (too long, naughty boy), and poor steering response prompted me to check it this morning - only 28psi on the front.

Recommended PSI is 42, front and rear, 1-up or 2-up. But I know many run their tyres softer. Does anyone run their's harder?

If you vary your pressure from recommended, why? Just feel, or do you have a good reason to do so.

I run the pilots and there at 42 psi
they have lasted a good lot of k's
and seem to stick to the black stuff good
even in the wet

I inflate my front & rear tyres to psi, and have managed to travel 9750klms on the rear tyre, the front tyre still looks OK.

That should read 42psi. (here we go again)
