After all the fuel lines, pump, electrical tests and wasted time, I broke down in Heidelberg and had to call a tow van. He took me to a local mechanic Ace motorcycle in West Heidelberg. Turns out (after hours of searching) there was water in the tank and the just cleaned injectors were covered in crap that came from further up the system. One Injector was ceased. Had to fix the tank and Injector and im back on the road. The mechanic is 98% happy and says later on (at next service ) he will get the machine to make sure that the spray pattern from the injectors is correct. Feels slightly lumpy at the bottom and now I am thinking the clutch might be on its way out. Still the fastest bike I have ever been on. Fingers crossed the big problems are behind me.

Shit! Heard two clunks under heavy throttle, jumped off and chain is Sagging. Pretty annoyed.

mate i bought my 99 2 years ago ,then i had drama after drama ,new motor new fuel take etc etc ,youl get there ,mine is bullet proof now just keep plugging along youl sort it,
the biggest problem is previous owners who buy ,scare the shit out of themselves ,then part the bike, then 1,2,3 years down the track think il sell it,by then the gremils have moved in

These bikes (gen1) are starting to get old , and things wear out etc. Most riders wont notice a gradual power decrease until it gets to the point were the bike wont start or run properly. But, by then the problems become compounded, and there's usually a list of things to fix.
Food for thought when you purchase your next gen1......

You are both on the money. When it's not broken I love the thing. There is no way I am going to give up on it now, spent too much already. Is it worth replacing chain and sprockets too? I'm sure they are on their way out.

Dig deep and sort all the crucial things, then it will be running sweet and safe and you can just enjoy it, rather than feel like you've never got it sorted.
Any other minor (non safety issues) can then be taken care of as part of regular maintenance.

I brought my 99 unseen sitting in a shed for couple of years strip it down and started with the basic, slowly getting there, when their running its sweet when they brake down its a hassle, broke down on the highway to springwood the other day and two harleys rider stop to see if they can help, had to truck it home. Even thought to myself about selling it, once i got it going i changed my mind.Cam shaft plug came a part. Keeping chipping away at it, you will be happy once all gremlins are remove.

Maybe I've just been lucky, my '99 I bought as a demo with 3,000k on the clock. Had the recalls done the next month, and had a few grumbles for 12 months with fuel filters, but once I cut all the screens out, replced the soft fuel lines, ditched the internal filter and ran 1 single inline filter ($5 lawnmower one) it has never played up. That was 13 years and over 250,000kms ago. Apart from shims and cam chain check at 150,000km, because it was getting noisey. It's never been near a mechanic.
Now that it's not being ridden so often I hope the gremlins don't get in.
I don't want a pickle . . .

I'm onto my 4th Gen 1 now. Never had a serious problem, apart from that one time when I tried to fix my own brakes .
Three of them have had well over 100,000km. The other was a Busa track bike, which had about 40 or 50,000km I think.
Of course, mine have all been pretty much stock (OEM).

Always thought that as part of the charm of owning an older bike, Ride-Tinker, Tinker-Ride.
Apart from that, id rather write of a 10 year old bike learning, than this years model.

How manys ks would it have done if you didn't maintain it do you think?
That's what I was tring to get across, some will just ride them in to the ground then replace them, leaving the new owner to weed through the under lying problems.
I've also owned a factory stock Busa with over 120k's and it still ran good numbers at the drags, also produced over 650hp out of them, but not without continued maintainence.

This is one way of getting rid of all the underlying problems & creating a few more. But its alright now.
