Hayabusa valve shim kits
#1
Need some advice. Need to buy a lot of valve shims. Anyone got any experience with a good brand and supplier?

Call me a cynic, but I strongly suspect these are all made by the same factory in China by chinese peasants shackled to a vice and wearing out files.

i have the hotcams kit, only a few of each size, not enough if you have major work that needs many set out of current range
+ the kit comes with 2 boxes, one of which you will never use ,( i tried to get 2 boxes of the gsxr/busa usable range at the time but no go )

I would get the cyclebuys one and top it with the refill kit in the sizes you need to carry another $70+ makes it a usable number of shims

Thanks Maj,

Yeah, I'll go with Cyclebuys and get the two top up kits to cover the range 2.4 to 2.95.

Amazing prices. I've still got a sizeable stash of Kawasaki overbucket shims somewhere in the bunker which we use to charge out at $8 each - exchange, with used ones! Gotta love the internet!

I remember those too. I have Kawasaki on-top-of-the-bucket shims, on top of the valve button shims and a plethora of FJ Yammerhammer shims from my old 1100 and 1200 fudges. Exchanged with your local bike shop. I take it your local Zook shop wont exchange?

Over bucket shims, good for old Jaguars, no good for Jap bikes. I lost count of the Z1 and z9s heads I saw with chunks taken out of them by wayward shims.

Not bothering with local dealer, too many shims required. Cyclebuys are sending me a full kit and two top up kits.

My next question is
What the normal cost if I take my bike
To raceway suzuki in melbourne, damien quoted me
$350 for the valve shim job-straight of the top of his head

The local 'new ' bike service shop quoted
$200 to just LOOK or
$350 in total to look & do the job

So is it an easy task or learn it by watchin
Youtube or is there a tech book of instructions

On shimin you busa valves, & to what .00 of a thou
Do u set them at ???

And besides do just the valves -what else in order
Needs to be done to work ,like I don't know

A number of other tech work ??

If the shims need changing (and they do not very often) the cams have to come out, replace the out of spec shims with the correct size, cams back in timing chain fitted right and timed
cam caps fitted and tensioned, not to mention the chain tensioner , cam covers, throttlebodies, coils wiring ,
not sure if $200 is good value to check but for all the extra work to change even 1 shim from that point the extra $150 is a bargain

I agree. Not a straightforward task. If you find several clearances are out and you go through the job of taking cams out, confirming shim size, working out correct shim, putting them all back, putting cams back in, etc, etc and then find after confirming clearances that one clearance is still too large/small then the whole lot has to come out again!

Thank God that valves and valve seats are made of sterner stuff these days. Back when I was a young whippersnapper the japs made valves and valve seats from a common metal called plasticene! Forever doing valve shims! But that's where overbucket shims had the advantage - you didn't need to pull the cams out! Just a special lever and a pair of tweezers.
