HID Electrics

Since fitting a main beam HID when I first turn it on the fuel gauge and temp gauge jump and then freeze. Could this be caused by electro magnetic interference from the ballast resistors proximity to the instrument cluster. I have it located under the lhs fairing insert near the fuses. Low beam ballast I have on the other side attached to the air duct and causes no issues. Once I turn the bike off , restart its all good and works fine, until such time as its left off for a while, ie ride through a lit up area for ten mins then switch on, the fuel and temp guage jump up and then freeze, switch off restart alls good again. It doesn't affect the main beam light, that works fine regardless of what the gauges are doing

Cheers

I found that it wasn't just the ballasts, with my bike. If I had the connectors close to my gauge cluster the gauges would freeze up, no matter how far away my ballasts were mounted.

I have both ballasts mounted on my R/H ram air tube, which puts them at a sufficient distance from the gauge cluster that they don't interfere with it.

I had no problems with my ballasts on this hayabusa. But I did have lots of problems on my second K8 white. so I bought my second set from MARS which were not cheap suppose to be the same a Philips from Germany. and they gave me no trouble. It's funny I had that set here and put on my 3rd Hayabusa and had the same trouble. So I bined them. I also added the ballasts to my AIR in takes with the wiring under the gauge cluster but down near the bottom so if I had to change the bulb I could come up from the front wheel to remove the bulb.
Thanks John

Hi to all

I placed my hid ballast just behind my lamp.
Therefore I have no problem I encountered with my reading of the meters, they work normally.

Hi Shifu
Thanks s#*t loads got set in, attached to ram intake. May have had 1 or 2 surges causing clock to change, but thats been mentioned by other members, maybe isolated incidents. Raising height of beam big help. Stay between the hedges

Still having issues with my main beam. Doesn't seem to matter where I place them either. Another problem that has now presented itself is it takes a few attempts to get the main beam globe to fire up. Once it has all is good. I think battery condition is fairly critical too. Could well be wrong though. Seems to not be such an issue after riding for 20 mins or so.

I've got one of the first products - a limited run from Iceman in the States. I tucked the ballast right next to the instrument cluster under the right inner fairing. It's actually secured onto the bike using the lower right hand bolt of the instrument cluster - it could not be any closer. No problem in 8 odd years, ever!

Attached a very basic on/off switch there too so the bike can be started with the HID off (biggest power drain is on start up). Can only suggests that you do the same, Pommie, and use a tickle charger.

Iceman also did a limited run of the meanest LED rear lights I've seen for the Gen 1 ever (got those at the same time). He really needs a kick to pursue doing those again.
Carpe Diem!

Update on HID's. Continuing probs with the main beam, takes numerous attempts to get it to fire up. Still freezes gauges when it does. Swapped battery just incase, even tried another kit and still the same. Getting to the end of me bit of rope with this, any other suggestions ??? Are bike HID kits different to car ones ??? Just occured that the low beam I bought as a bike HID kit the other two are for cars ..

Its been suggested bad earth but I'd of thought the lights shared an earth and in that case the low beam would be affected too, another suggestion was wiring not heavy enough to carry the current to fire up the HID (55w). Also posibly the relay. Does it have a high beam relay ??

Bike uses nose / headlight circuit as an earth ballast for it's electronics so there is a good chance it's interfering in some way and hence effecting gauges.
Also the slim line ballast can have a prob with over heating when tucked into confined areas.
Do you use the start method that allows bike to start before headlights are powered ?

I dont use that method as I have no problem with the runing light( low beam). The problem is when the bike is running and switching on main/high beam so it would be recieving full battery power

Final update hopefully. I've run a seperate earth to the ballast, installed a relay using the existing hi beam wiring from the switch to trigger it, run slightly heavier wiring from the relay to the light, slim ballast still wouldnt work properly but std one did. Waved my magic wand to make a bit of space t install std ballast and all now seems well
