Aftermarket Triple Tree Issue / Worry
#1
Hi guys,
Gregg here, I know im not very active here but I do lurk :)
Here is the problem or worry im having. I recently purchased a heap of chrome bits for my Gen2 this month and once of those parts is their triple Chromed Triple Tree. I have never removed one before but I gave it a go and did ok. Got the bars out the master cylinders off and successfully removed the OEM one. I then had issues at the Key Cover or Key Cap, whatever you want to call it. The triple tree I bought IS for both Gen 1 and Gen 2, I checked. The problem is the Triple Tree has the key cover incorporated into the Triple Tree itself. Now I did undo the two bolts going up holding the Key Cover in place but to my surprise there's a nice little circuit board inside the thing. I researched and discovered this is the immobilizer and antennae for the immobilizer. I was then NOT game to try and remove or pry out the internals as I thought I might have damaged something delicate AND the fact im not sure whats usually done in this case. If there is anyone who can give an opinion or help etc... Id love to listen! :)

PS. Sorry if this was a dumb question... Cheers....

immobiliser should just unbolt from one and refit to the other unless it is not gen 2 compatable .
don't touch the internals or damage the immobiliser or you will have to send the complete immobiliser, ecu, key set to me for a swap on a complete functioning set i have here ;)

Yeah, theres is definately room to have it fit... but as I said its going to be difficult as I have never seen one pulled out or seen HOW to pull it out. I have a reputation for being a little bit rough and impatient at times lol... I seriously thought there would have been a how to with PICS somewhere out there? Nothing on youtube, busanation, hayabusa.org etc... ive looked lots of place! :/

I hope you are talking about the handlebar bracket that bolts to the upper tripple tree. (pictures always help). I came across the same problem a while ago and discovered that the ones with the cover over the ignition switch WILL NOT FIT Gen 2 bike. The vendor talk shit saying that it will fit Gen 1 & Gen 2. There is not enough space on Gen2 there for the ignition switch to fit. There was no problem fitting it into the Gen 1 at all. Sorry but you need to get one with a correct shape cut-out in that area and beware as some of these "machined from solid billet" have incorrect shape around the ignition switch and will also not fit. The best option in my opinion is to get the original bracket chromed (change over service) or get one chromed. There are some vendors on e-bay or you can try allthingschrome.com in US. Good luck

I got caught also, I did this you can fit the gen 2 unit to a gen 1 top with out pulling it all apart, it just still a little higher & the steering lock still works, I pit an extra washer under the two long small bolts it & seem to remember having to cut / grind a small bit off somewhere where the key assembly fits in,

Hey, thanks for the feedback I appreciate the effort :) The unit I have IS from AllThingsChrome as I have dealt with them a few times and their products are amazing. I double checked on their ebay and homepage and this particular triple tree IS said to fit both Gen1 and Gen2. I have sent them an email quizing them on the issue im having just to see if they made a goof up. Underneather the triple tree it is very hollow towards the top and looks like the internals of the key cover (immobilizer etc) will have room in their. As I said its just getting it out and whether or not to pad the hell out of as im not keen to leave it in their next to bare chrome! I wish they had sent more info. I try not to complain too much about things but this really annoyed me as I had EVERYTHING off and ready and was literally held up by the last piece in the puzzle :/

Hey, nice bike there! I would rather not do any grinding and what have you to tell you the truth. Plus I read that the angle of the bars is different on the Gen1 to Gen 2... dont they touch your panels?

I have heli bars on mine also so it sits a bit higher again, the clutch & brake reservoir just touches the dash panel on lock (no big deal), I do have my leavers facing down bit (more comfortable to operate) if I level them out if clears ok if that makes any sense
If you drop the ignition switch over the new triple tree & line up the two small long bolts you will see what you have to do, I decided just to modify it slightly & get it over & done with, Pi_thumbsup

Yeah, I lined it up yesterday and it actually has the thread for the bolts that go up through the key cover. Im way too scared to try pull the guts out of it until I find out how. The bike has to go for its 5k service tomorrow so im thinking I just get them to do it. If they dont charge much :)
So whats the spec on your bike? Looks a bit of a rig! :)
