Checking oil level

I'm sure it's been asked before, but do I look at it while it's on the sidestand or paddock stand? What if it's had the sidestand mod? Wouldn't it be sitting lower and thus influence the reading?

Park on some level ground and stand on the right side of the bike holding the bike upright then you should see the correct level.

But personally I never leave the oil in long enough that it needs to be toped up, and when I do change it I measure the amount of oil as per the manual and use the sight glass as a secondary check only

If you are going to hold the bike up on a level, do you use a level ? Otherwise, how do you know its level ? I mean, I tried my level best, but.... if I'm going to level with you... I'm crap at judging level. Also, if you say level repeatedly, the word loses all meaning.... why is that ?

all that on my 1397 and just had to do the oil mod

Remove sump plug and drain oil.
Replace plug and fill with militec.
Run for 12 seconds and drain.
Fill with oleon run for 14 seconds.
Drain sump.

Run empty thereafter.
You will gain 500 horsepower and get a gazillion miles per gallon oh and it will run like a peach forever.

I'm kacking myself

I'll have some of that extra power, but I won't be able to use it.

In all honesty though, once you get up over the 70,000 ks on your bike I reckon you can expect to burn a little oil over a 5,000 k change period. I usually top up with 100ml between oil changes.
No problems.
Yes Pan, bike should be flat on the ground, not on a sidestand or paddock stand, oil should be between middle and top of sight glass.

Best way is to be on your knees holding it upright (hand on tank is easiest) and have a torch if it's dark. <i></i>

I did my oil change yesterday and as is my nature, I checked the manual for guidance.
Low and behold it says that putting more than the recommended amount of oil, 3300ml or 3700ml with new filter, will reduce the horsepower produced.
It also says that the oil should be changed at 6000k and the filter every 18000k.

There you go, most of us are overservicing our bikes.
(Unless you ride in extreme conditions such as race meetings and dirty environments)
