I'm always a person to say "better safe than sorry" when I replaced the gear position sensor and the back torque limiter I still used gasket glue with the new gasket.... I used loctite No.3 Non-Hardening sealant, (Aviation Sealant).... But I reckon 3-bond liquid grey is the best.... Apply a little at a time with your finger, make sure all parts (and fingers) are free from oil, dirt etc... You can't go wrong mate... Very Happy

New gasket on clean surfaces , never used sealant, most oem gaskets have a external coating now that seals well, and lets the gasket remove easily later ,
also no sealant to cause probs in the motor ,seen pickups blocked with silicone more than once

+1 Maj is right new gasket should not need anything if both surfaces are good .

New gasket, light smear with grease to allow it to slide nicely home as it's tightened. Also comes off a treat later.

I had to remove my new OEM gasket and apply a sealant, because it was leaking, but having read this I must have not prepared the surfaces properly. Doesn't the manual tell you to apply it?

That's what I thought too.... According to my workshop manual, it says to use sealant with new gasket(s) Confused

Maybe what works for others might not work for all?

Rod, the manual says to spread some goop on the area of the gasket that crosses the join in the cases and between the two bolt holes on each side. No more. You don't need any more than that and it's a bitch to get off if you cover the whole mating surfaces the next time you change the cover gasket.
