99-02 Busa Non Clutch Starter to 2003 Onwards Clutched Starter
#1
Hello

If you have a 1999 to 2002 model Hayabusa and want to upgrade your starting system from the no clutched idle gear to the clutched idle gear limiter version using the parts from the 2003 onwards models to prevent that expensive damage to the starting motor spline from back fires.

I have a 2000 model Hayabusa and I'm wanting to do the starting system upgrade.

What parts do I need?

Well your 99/02 Busa part numbers are;

starting motor________part # 31100-24F01
idler gear____________part # 12611-24F01
starter clutch set_____part # 12600-24840
pin_________________part # 12151-09204
starter idler gear cap__part # 11382-24F00
starter clutch cover___part # 11380-24F01

The 2003-2007 Busa part numbers are;

starting motor______________part # 31100-24F10
2003-2007 idler gear is now called starter idler gear limiter
starter idler gear limiter_______part # 12600-24F00
2004 starter clutch set_______part # 12600-24850
2005-2007 starter clutch set__part # 12600-24860
pin________________________part # 12615-24F00
starter idler gear cap_________part # 11382-24F20
starter clutch cover__________part # 11380-24F20

What starting system parts are necessary to change on the 1999-2002 Hayabusa to the 2003 onwards Hayabusa starting system parts to fix the earlier starting back firing issues?

Can someone list them please?

Hi Ant.

I have a 2000 as well and figured I'd upgrade once the parts wear out. I'm reliably informed that if you keep your battery in good condition, you shouldn't have a problem - there are plenty of them out there not experiencing any kick back damage. Also, you'll avoid the kick back problem if when starting, you only release the key once the engine has fired.

More relevant to your post, you could get the parts off of a wrecked low mileage 2003+ bike.

I'm with you, Throwdown cross that bridge IF you come to it . Carbon Busa has a link to a mob in the USA who will supply as new used parts t6o do the complete job for about $700 USD ,so why sweat it. Keep your battery up to scratch & your fingers crossed & your ears peeled during start up. If it Doe's happen 700 buck's isn't that hard to find.& if it doesn't ,why waste 700 bucks .You feeling lucky ? I am .

Thanks for the replies. I've owned my 2000 model for 3.5 years. I'm aware of the starting procedures and risks but I have installed HID lights and the damage to my starter has already happened. I have a source where to buy the parts but I need advice which exact parts are needed to be changed to make the change over work. This is why I listed the co-inciding part numbers.

If someone can please give advice what parts are needed to change over this would be extremely appreciated.

Cheers

Hi Ant.

Just offering options. I was one the first put a HID headlight on a Hayabusa, and was advised to link an on/off switch to it, so it could be switched off for starting up the bike. Even if you upgrade the starter clutch, it might still be a good idea to do that as well.

I've also put LED lights on rear drive/brake lights and indicators back and front which would bring the power drain from lights down by about 75%+ if the headlight is switched off, and about half the power consumption of OEM when riding along which helps the battery and gives a bit more room for thngs like an alarm or heated grips/rider wear etc...

Good luck with it.

Yeah I'm either going to fit the DEI 528T Delay Switch or the European light switch to sort that out. I'm not sure which one but am leaning towards the European light switch...which at least would keep it all Busa

I just went to a wrecker and bought a std RH switch block with the headlight switch included. The 99 Busa wiring has provision for the switch, so it's a matter of removing the old, pull out a jumper link, plug in the new switch and you have a headlight switch. HID driven change!

I'm also looking at doing this modification/repair - mines pretty ratshit and it's probably just a matter of time before it goes west.

From what I've gathered reading here and here: http://www.sportbikes.net/forums/suzuki-...ation.html

The parts I'll be needing are:

New starting motor Part# 31100-24F10
New Starter Idler Gear Limiter Part # 12600-24F00
New Pin Part # 12615-24F00
Older Starter Clutch Part # 12600-24840
New Starter Idler Gear Cap Part # 11382-24F20
New Starter Clutch Cover Part # 11380-24F20
New Starter Cover Gasket Part #11491-24F01
Same Gaskets Part #'s 11492-24F00, 09166-16002
Same O-ring Part # 09280-33004

If/when I get around to doing this myself I'll confirm this info.

It's not the starter spline thats expensive to fix, it's when the kick back breaks the boss of the engine case that creates the shit.

Well I swapped out mine tonight and it started like a champ.
I was expecting to find broken teeth etc since it was making an awful cracking sound every now and then, but no, nothing - it looked mint. Hmm. I'll see how it goes. Hopefully it will charge and hold as it should otherwise I'll be doing further testing on the electricals.

So fitting HID is a greater power draw than standard is that right ??? Iwas gonna put a switch on the earth side of mine when it gets here anyway but be interesting to know

Only on startup I believe, once running they usually draw less current.
I fitted an electrical delay to mine - I think I set it to ~20 seconds. By then I'm on the bike and it's started before they kick in and draw power.
