Air box mod? Pros and cons
#1
Hi all,
been searching a fair bit about airbox mods, but cant come up with anything with evidence to back it up. Plenty of people seem to have done it, but info is still scarce.
I am looking at doing the "small" airbox mod.
The bike is a gen1, 06, daily rider. It will be mapped accordingly if I decide to do any airbox mods. As it is a daily ride, I don't really want to lose midrange.
I would appreciate if anyone who has done it, and tuned to suit, could share their experience.

i will lave this one to others to answer who have more mechanical knowledge then me

I own an 06 and it was the first thing done to my bike by a mate of mine who already owned a busa 07 and a mechanic who is a friend of mine

didnt own the bike long enough as a standard to note any real difference but the dyno reading says it did

i think it sacrificed a bit of fuel economy but then again i didn't buy the bike on its fuel performance

No problem at all ............. like with all and any changes as long as you re map accordingly will be the cheapest Hp you'll ever get. Pi_thumbsup
No loss of mid range either Pi_thumbsup

I'm not mechanic (not even close) but my 2 cents.
The flapper operates below about 2500rpm, so it would probably make more difference when idleing off the mark and cruising around town. The busa is doing 2000rpm at 60kmph in top, and will happily do it.

I tend to get the feeling that most people that have done it don't bother to get their bikes re-tuned to suit, so that's why the mis-conception of it losing midrange. If you do it, follow thru and get it dynoed, bit like when you add a pipe. Undecided
(How many bikes do you hear farting and popping on decel with a non-tuned aftermarket pipe!)

Get Volvi's comment on the difference of feel, as he had it the flapper removed for several years, but then swapped back to standard.

I don't want a pickle . . .

Funnily enough riding a Busa with the air box Mod - TRE and IAP mapped CORRECTLY ............... the most noticeable difference is around town in light traffic conditions ............. no surge ............. smooth crisp throttle response.
Popping and farting on decel is caused by unburnt fuel burning in the exhaust ................. and you won't even get that unless air can enter the system via pair or joint leaks for no matter how much fuel no air no burn.
The key is correct fueling modded or stock.

It's not just the removal of the flapper, as you have mentioned that wouldnt effect much.
The "small" airbox mod is when the material from around the flapper (including the flapper) is cut away, basically to the size of the filter, which is a fair bit of material.

Especially on the US forums, I got sick of reading very conflicting results, when no-one had retuned to suit.
I look forward to hearing from Volvi his experiences.
