I'm just putting together my next trip, and I think I'll do a bit more sleeping on the side of the road (it was one of the highlights of the loop).
I've just found my ultimate swag, it zips right around so you are a bit like a sausage roll with eyes, but wriggly things can't climb in with you. It has a small frame at both ends for airflow. The downsides are it weighs 7kgs (more once you add bedding) and is about 75cms long when rolled up, so will stick a considerable distance out both sides of the bike.
My other option is a small pup tent (which folds down to nothing) and a bed roll which I can keep considerably smaller for the bike. The other positive to the tent is that I can pull my gear in with me and nothing will take up residence in my boots. The downside is that you are not sleeping in a swag under the stars in the middle of absolutely nowhere.
Does anyone have experience or suggestions?

These bags the Canadian Mounties use good to about minus 30 degrees

Swags are great, I used one heaps whilst living in Alice. Heavy duty canvas, great for the desert even in winter. Queensize, big foam mattress, you made it up with sheets, pillows and doona before you went out, then just rolled it up. Under the stars it was magic.
. . . and whats more, it would roll up to only about 75cm diameter, 1.5 metres longs and weigh about 35kg. Maybe you could have it couriered to your camping spot each night
- got a mate that reckons 3 stars is as close to camping as he ever wants to get.
- how about a Winnebago support vehicle?????
I don't want a pickle . . .

Last time I went away I bought a tent for the trip. It was $19 from the tent shop. No wider than the tail and about 150mm in dia. Packed my undies/shirt into the tent bag and that was it. No mattess etc.
Left the tent erected as it was only $19!
Novotel do a mean continental breakfast Heidi.
I love the swag I have right now, I use it quite a bit, it is just too big to carry on the bike. The Canberra Riders club has helped me decide. Thanks for all your help.

Hmmm Heidi did I mention to you about the purple swag (motorcycle size) you can get? with black PVC bases for waterproofing??
Swag days... loved them.
The grand swag, has gone many miles with me, and kept me dry and comfortable - albeit same thing too wide, I have been thinking of a smaller version (coloured) for the bike.
It was funny to see the tough bushies, in the middle of winter (yes it was cold) parked next to the power pole with lead coming out from box and snaking its way into the swag. :-)
I was looking into trialling different mattresses to see what packs smallest or isn't too bad on the back.

Heidi, Sidecar you can sleep in, better than having an erection every night before bed.

Im voting for CJ's idea.... The novatel is a great camping idea... or at least my camping idea... the thought of sleeping on da ground without something soft underneath just makes my back ache.... LOL
Good luck with the decisions Heidi....

Personally, I don't mind a swag or a bedroll inside my little lean to tent that hooks off my bike. Most small country towns have a showground, which means some form of shelter otherwise it's hard to go past that neon light that say's; "Vacancies".
