Camel's K8
#1
I've been fooling around with my K8's ECU and I'm more than happy with the results. But before I go chasing bigger horsepower and the bike is still stock (actually, I should say reverted to stock - even stock pipes) I thought I'd add a datalogger.

So far I've removed the sixth gear speed limiter and the timing restriction on gears two and three. However, recent research by guys such as Petrik et al on activeboard shows that the STVA is also restricting power in 2 and 3, hence the data logger.

Here's what I've done.

1. After stuffing around trying to source all the individual components via the net I called Greg at boostbysmith and bought a Gen I and a Gen II interface. Prompt, efficient service.

Here's the guts of the unit. Beautifully crafted.

2. To fit the interface I first removed the battery, then pulled out the AP sensor to better access the SDS/Dealer plug and 'Yosh' Plug.

3. Next I removed the black plug from the ECU.

4. On the incoming side of the black plug you can see where the interface's brown and blue wires need to be fitted.

5. Use a paper clip or similar 'probe' to push out the plastic plugs from pin locations 25 and 28.

6. I removed the orange feeder plate (two readily identifiable clips either end) from the front of the black ECU plug so I could ensure the new pins were driven home properly.

7. Orienting them as shown, I inserted the brown and blue interface pins right through the rubber seal of the black plug until I heard the retaining clip snap into place. A quick visual confirmed they had seated. I had a bit of trouble securing the brown wire and found I had to carefully use my paper clip to help push it through.

8. Here's the ECU end of the interface cable in place.

9. Now to insert the brown and blue wires into the 'Yosh' Plug. First remove the yellow locking plate by pressing a small screwdriver against the detent and gently levering the plate up and out.

11. Gently pick out or push through the green plastic pin plugs from the back of the plug.

12. Looking at the back of the 'Yosh' plug, the brown wire goes into the top right pin location and the blue into the top left.

13. Confirm correct connection by aligning the plug and socket and matching the wires. Separate and finish off by pushing the yellow locking plate back into position and then attaching the interface's matching 'Yosh' Plug.

10. Next, remove the the SDS plug sealing cap and attach the matching interface plug. Clip the black plug back into the ECU.

15. This is how the various cables and plugs should look once all connected.....

.....and tucked away.

16. Then the USB end into the laptop.

When I get some time tonight I'll post up my Vista installation (and com port hassles) as well as how I flicked my 6th gear speed limiter and 2-3 gear restrictions.

Camel .................. great write up EXCELLENT Clap
The more you use this you will find the better it is.................. have had excellent results here and been running fully flashed custom built fuel map for about a month now and all is good ............... actually make that great.Pi_thumbsup
Have also done a few customers bikes (one again today) with the same great results.
Like yourself full Kudos to all the guys that have made this inovation possible and Petrik especially as his back up is second to non. I asked him if we could have a print feature in the software one night and it was there the next day................... thats back up.
Once again Excellent write up and pics.

Thanks for the feedback Pete, I've been playing with a few Busa's over here in Perth, mainly busa engined off-road racing buggies. They've got a real need for remapping because gearing, ram-air, heat, airboxes are individualised. I'll get into the rest of the write-up tonight.

One problem. I need to edit my posts and it won't let me! What do I need to do?

The club is going through a period of "calm contemplation" at the moment, to aid this the admins have tuned this feature to allow 60 minutes for an edit - so it's think twice post once Lol3

Greg and Petrik are both awesome guys and looked after me when I was chasing HP ... (I found some extra and the result was a destroyed bike; let down by the tires :( ) complimented my Motty (now a pile of wires and plastic) and the rest of the mods bueatifully fully plan to go down the same road again on the new bike ...when i eventually get one. Top blokes and know thier shit !!!!
Egos; everyone got one

Send the changes to me Camel and I'll organise to make them. Use my PM.

Oh... and the edit period is only 15 minutes.

Responses to a couple of questions pmed to me, I thought I'd add them here.

I reverted the busa to stock standard as I wanted a baseline from which to measure improvements. Over stock, simply changing the 2nd and 3rd gear ignition map restrictions and the top speed limiter gave little perceptible improvement over stock, (I haven't had a chance to wind it up 300 yet!). The reason the 2nd and 3rd gear restrictions didn't do too much was because the secondary throttle valves (STVA) are also restricted in movement and he pre-release software I'm using doesn't yet address them.

The big gains will come when I modify the bike from standard and tune the appropriate maps to suit. Being unable to tune the bike to the mods has been my biggest frustration with EFI ever since my first foray into EFI on the GPZ1100B1 back in 1981. I'd modified many carburetted big bore bikes and knew what could be gained from tuning to suit, but you never saw similar/relative gains on EFI bikes because the work-arounds were always compromises.

Yes, you can use your mate's interface to flash your ECU, but it will be a bit of a hassle and generally only if you're only going to change the 6th gear speed limiter and 2nd and 3rd gear restrictions, because all you'd need to do is swap ECUs, start a new map with a readily identifiable .bin name in ECU Editor, make appropriate setting changes and flash away. That is unless you or your mate is willing to make another pigtail or unwire his interface, wire it into your bike and then do the same again to put it back into his bike. Much easier to buy a ready made interface, because then you can really play with your ECU and dial in the appropriate tune for your new pipes, turbo, etc.

Camel the guy that wants to use his mates interface could always just buy the "On Bench" loom and do his on the bench ? I think $90 and just so happen to have them in stock. Yes That way between them they then would have an on and off bike flash set up.

Also a great write up, it would have been very handy for me the other week, one tip I'll give you, pull the battery out when setting it up, gives you more room, LOL
Also Pete thanks for the on going support Pi_thumbsup

Thanks Simmo, it's in step 2. I didn't include the image as I thought it would be clear enough in text, but there ya go, people only see the photos! So here it is:

I'm resubmitting the whole thread to go under 'DIY'. If you guys prefer, I'll do the step-by-step process with an image for each one (already done, ready to submit).

Camel an apology if required re the parts availabilty .............. no harm or thread jacking mean't just trying to let the person asking the question know that he could get what he wished (to use his friends interface) for as little as $7.
Also re the STVA try and get hold of a SDS unit (Hens teeth) and you may be surprised at what you can do regards them as far as changing basic settings. Will have to chat sometime as have been running fully flashed for awhile now with a few suck it and see dyno runs (about 50 lol) playing with different SDS settings.

The GEN II with more miles on a roller than the road Lol3

Hi Pete,

no, please fire away, it's relevant info. As for the SDS, that's what got me onto Activeboard, I'd been trying to get my hands on an SDS but was coming up against all sorts of bullshit from Suzuki (just like all the problems I'm having trying to get a key for another SAIS immobilised zook I've got). From discussions with suzuki dealers/mechanics I was surprised at how little SDS could do.

Camel follow what your saying re Suzuki ............. all part of the locking up the servicing which when looked into almost contravenes the trade practices act actually. Re the SDS it's not what you can do with it ............. it's more what you can't do without it.
