NSW Government vehicle modification laws.
#1
Hi there,

I thought I would put this into general discussion as it has the potential to affect members on this forum.

The NSW State government announced on the 16th July that it would be introducing VSI-50. This new standard makes it a requirement to have an engineers certificate for any change in ride height of a vehicle greater than 50mm. This is a combined number, including suspension and wheel diameter changes.

For the boy racers, your lowered car, if it is lower than 50mm from it's original ride height, is now illegal. For the 4wd vehicles, if you have a 50mm lift and a set of tyres 1 size over standard then it will also be illegal. It is a common mod to go up 50mm, and up 1 size of tyre to access many places that this beautiful country has to offer. This reduces damage to the vehicle and the ground that it hits when negotiating difficult tracks. The quickest way to sell the idea of a lift kit is to do rock steps in their std height vehicle, the crashing and banging from uderneath makes you cringe.

4wd clubs in particular are up in arms due to the lack of consultation in this process, the fact of the matter is that there was none. This piece of legislation becomes law on 1AUG09, and is retrospective.

The normal ride height figures are to be supplied by the vehicle manufacturer. There is supposed to be a national standard coming out for vehicle modifications, we may get away with a more lenient system yet.

Bless them, they are little doers. No more than 2" drop for the drags boys or it's a trailer ride to and from the track.

NSW MINISTER FOR ROADS
MICHAEL DALEY MP
NEWS RELEASE

MINISTER AGREES TO FURTHER CONSULTATION ON
CAR MODIFICATION LAWS
Wednesday 29 July 2009

Minister for Roads Michael Daley today met with representatives from the 4WD community and car industry who asked for the introduction of proposed vehicle modification rules to be delayed and for more time to consult. Mr Daley said he agreed to put the rule changes on hold and that more consultation was needed following the meeting.

“Iâ€ve listened to feedback from the industry and the community, and have agreed to set up a working party to look more closely at how we are going to address this road safety issue,” he said.

“All of those who attended todayâ€s meeting agreed that safety is paramount and that unsafe modifications of vehicles do need be stamped out.

“The working group will include representatives from the NSW Centre for Road Safety, Four Wheel Drive NSW-ACT, Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association, the Australian 4WD Industry Council as well as other agencies and experts,” Mr Daley said.

Executive Director of Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association Stuart Charity said this was a terrific outcome.

“Weâ€re passionate about road safety and we understand the intent of the regulation is to make the roads safer,” he said.
Weâ€re looking forward to working towards a practical solution that meets road safety objectives while also taking industry views into account,” Mr Charity said.

Greg Redfern from Four Wheel Drive NSW-ACT also welcomed the outcome and said the working group would have their full support.

“We want to eliminate unsafe practices in the driving community and weâ€ll work with the government to make sure these new regulations meet those objectives without any adverse consequences for the motoring community at large,” he said.

“We all agree that there is no place for extreme and illegal modifications, but the clubs in our association follow a strict code of conduct and ethics, and we want to make sure theyâ€re not punished,” Mr Redfern said.

It would be interesting to see how those VSI's would relate to motorcycles, as I doubt anyone who'd be enforcing them would even know the std ride height of a busa! & besides, my interpretation has always been that veh's fitted standard with adjustable suspension is perfectly legal & the only thing they can go off is the standard 100mm clearance from the lowest hanging part of the vehicle, which in the act only relates to cars etc, no mention of motorcycles from what I can remember.

The one's they should be targeting are the bullshit doof doof mobiles with big arse plastic bodykits, wings that would look stupid on a 300kmh sport sedan & 22+" wheels with 15 series tyres & only sit 10mm off the road, they're the ones that cause the problems!!
