Question on starter and lot more.....
#1
Hi,

My bike died on me, this weekend. I just added new battery and it was fine – there was lot of cranking done – trying to start the machine. Then my battery died out of cranking so I had to jump start it.

Today also it was about to give up but then it started. I noticed that since last Saturday when I was trying to crank the bike. During the process there was loud thud noice as if the started wheel didnâ€t engage or broke the tooth etc, then the starter went into free status – it just went zuemmeen… and no crank. So I put the bike in second gear and gave it a nudge and tried it again and with some persistence it started.

This morning the bike started on its own – far bit of trying but the starter went into free spin and I had to do the same 2 gear nudge again.

Has some thing gone wrong with the stater wheel or the crank wheel. If so then what kind of work I am looking at.
Is 80K to much for a average rider like me. Who even after regular maintenance cant keep his bike running.

I have 3 specific questions

1) What needs to be done to starter to insure that it runs fine and starts the bike

2) why suddenly out of the blue on fine day the bike wont start. (am I missing any thing in maintenance) i.e. I drop the oil every 3 to 4 K, clean the KNN at the same time, Just about 6K back I had new plugs etc....

3) should I change and get a new bike.

I am ready to change to a new bike if issues like start to peep up. Just being a concerned father of 2 – just donâ€t want to spend on a new bike if this can be worked and lived for next few months / years.

Cheers,

Bill

Hey Bill, is the starter engaging the motor at all or just spinning without any effort going into it? At 80K the damned thing is just run in bloke. The loud thud noise is a bit of a worry.
Is the 2nd gear nudge you are speaking about you jump starting the bike or is the starter engaging the motor?

the starter clutch on the end of the crank is a sprag clutch and can slip if worn,
big worry is kickback that can damage the cases where the idler gear shaft mounts.
easy to see the idler section by removing the covers.

After about few cranks, when I jumped the bike. the starter was spinning without engaging at all, then I put the bike in gear and nudge it a bit - put is back in neutral and started it with starter. it worked after about 2 attempts.

The loud thud noice was when I was trying to start it and I think I re-engaged the started quickly....after the first trial.

Is this a starter clutch or something.

Hi Maj,

I will be changing the clutch plates this weekend, will open - inspect and will upload the pics.
