Smart TRE - how reliable ?
#1
Greetings guys - about 9 months ago i fitted a TRE to my bike - whilst there was no HUGE difference - there was a difference and i have been happy motoring since the install ...... ( 2000 busa)

UNTIL..........

About 2 weeks back - i had a really CRAP day , you know those days when you should have just stayed in bed and poked yourself in the eye with fork as it would have been far more constructive a day than what you just had ......... well i had this day -- to top it off had my x - her mum and sister come to my HOUSE screaming AT ME FOR ABOUT 2 HOURS over child custody issues , police had to be called ( by me )

anyway that day - i take a ride to the local cop shop -- bike is running like CRAP Idols like shit --- trying to stall and very hard to leave from a standing start ---- then when i am riding it would not keep a steady throttle - IE trying to ride at 3000 rpm it was trying to kangaroo hop, hard on the gas it was OK -- to cruise - impossible

get it home - into the garage - lift the tank - take the TRE out - start it up ..... and like magic running smooth as - can cruise again - but with the slugish down low power ( before the TRE install )

so anyone else had this problem ? for the record it was a Checkered flag TRE

They have been known to develop loose connections on the plugs and bad solders within.
You may be able to test it on a multimetre or simply plug it back in again making sure that all the connections are tight after spraying with contact cleaner.

If you get no joy fixing up your TRE, you could reflash the ECU to remove the 6th gear limit. (Unless you use it for gear indicator as well.) This would allow you to dump the TRE altogether. If you really wanted the bike running the same as with the TRE, it should be possible to apply the 5th gear fuel and ignition map to the ECU and unify the maps across all gears assuming thats what that particular model of TRE does. If you are in Vic, Maj should be able to help you out there.

As far as I am aware all the TRE's are is just a resistor which tells the bike it is in 5th gear all the time.

The other option which I have done, is to solder the correct value 5th gear resistor into the GPS circuit and chuck the TRE. Resistors are about 6 cents from Dick Smiths. I cant remember the exact value of the resistor but if you need to know I can find out or someone else on the forum should know.

Just some options for your consideration. Good Luck.Action-smiley-083

throw it in the bin,i had one and it was crap, and yes the wires pulled out and before that occurred i checked the voltage output and it was showing 6thgear voltage not 5th gear.Get an ivans smart tre which is the blue one if you want the tre effect and a good idle,or flash the ecu.

I don't think that you can if it is the original ECU. i.e 99/00 model.

A chequerflag smart TRE should show 5th gear to the ECU and neutral when in neutral. Nothing else.

All the info you need is this forum.

First you need to identify if you have a 16 bit or 32 bit ECU.

If you need help to build a reflasher or want one built send me a PM and I will help you out. I have made a few now and have got it down pat.

I finally found th elink to identify a 16 bit ECU.

http://www.bikeland.info/downloads/ecu/E...OT_001.pdf

You can identify the 16 bit from the size as per the pdf on the link.

Ok so i would be better off replacing my 16 bit ( if it is ) with a 32 bit ? from what the forums say its easier to flash the 32 bit and far cheaper than the 16 bit ?
would one from a 2003 model busa go onto the 2000 without to much mods ??

found one on ebay (USA) here is this mod well worth it -- or should a power comander be the way to go ?

No, not without a lot of work. Stick with the 16bit ECU.
You can't really convert easily and not worth the trouble in my opinion.
Easier to swap bikes if that is the way you want to go. Especially given the current second hand market.

No way, stay with the 16bit. I wouldnt bother with a power commander, instead get the GI Pro, then if you have after market cans on get a tune by reputable dealer who will tune the ecu to suit the bike.

PS. you will find it very handy to have a gear indicator and mount it ontop of dash, do a search here many topics on subject with pics.

Allrighty guys , i have read the pages on the GI pro website ( http://www.gi-pro.net/) and i think i may get one of these to replace my dodgy TRE

If you guys give it glowing reports and highly suggest i get it to suit my 2000 model bike than i will do so ---- so please guys - if you highly recommend it -- let me know -- if you think its just snake oil - also let me know :)

thanks
