System Restore is always a good one.
If you just got it say 1 day ago then restore the pc to say 2 days back.
To find system restore go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/
Has saved me soooo many times...

Hi Max, If Pete's suggestion is unsuccessful, (Do it first).
Try this on Alex's computer.
1. Click on the Start button and select the RUN command.
This will open a window where you can type a command in.
2. Type regedit and hit the enter key.
This will open the Windows REGISTER where how your computer runs is controlled.
3. At the top of the screen is a menu bar, select Edit and then Find.
This will open a search window. Type in rKvodifi.exe - the file you are concerned about.
The computer search will go through the hundreds of lines of the registry and report back if it finds the file you are looking for.
4. IF the file is found, let me know. I might be able to talk you through getting rid of it.

Thanks Ray, I'll wait until Alexander gets home from School today and we'll run throught it, Pete's suggestion first, if that's unsuccessful we'll go with your option. If we do it together, we'll both learn from it.

Thanks for the assist gents.

Toshiba Tecra S1 laptop.
Had a soundblaster external card and driver which worked fine.
Removed it and went back to default soundcard/driver setup.

If I reboot winamp plays songs at half speed.
If I switch pc off wait 20 secs or so and restart it plays normally again.

I reformatted and have no extra software installed.

Any ideas...?

It is the BIOS software that is causing the problem. (One of the settings) Windows is doing something at restart that is not compliant with the Hardware settings in the BIOS.

When you do a restart only, it does not CLEAR the BIOS. When you turn the PC off and back on, the BIOS is cleared and starts according to the hardware settings on the motherboard.

I'm thinking that there may be an option to enable the motherboard sound card in the BIOS options that would have been turned off to allow the external soundcard to work.

now that is the most logical answer I have heard.
Thanks Busgo. I will have a deeper look at bios settings again and report back if I have any joy...

Update.
Could only find bios reset to default button.
Did that but same problem.
Anyway I know the workaround so just an annoyance really now...

Getting into the BIOS setup on Laptops is not easy these days, given the speed with which they boot up and the small time frame available to bypass the start process.
You will find the keystroke settings in the PC handbook if you can locate one.
(Unfortunately, the standardisation of every manufacturer using the same combo has been lost long ago).

Not sure about downloading it, except from Microsoft.
However, you can buy the full Office package for students fairly cheap these days so long as you have a schoolchild or uni student in the family.
Try Officeworks or Harvey Normans if they have them in VIC.

I downloaded SP3 and after installing it my sound card stopped working.
The new driver install took forever and still didn't work.
Now every time I reboot the laptop, the 'New Hardware Found' window pops up.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are on broadband, I suggest that you do the following steps.
1. Close all applications,
2. Go to Device Manager (Right click on my computer, click on properties, click on the Hardware tab)
3. Right click on the line for the sound card and delete it.
4. Shut down the PC and restart it.
5. When the PC restarts and finds the sound card, click on the option to use the Internet to find the correct driver.
6. If the correct driver is found, install it and if prompted, restart the PC again.

If all the above works properly, your sound card should be back to normal operation unless you have altered any hardware settings on the card or moved any of the wires.

How do I get in to change the screen resolution settings???

My daughter had a play & changed the screen resolution & then re-started.
Now, when booting up I get,
a) the standard "back ofice" stuff
b) The windows XP "Starting up" screen
c) Then nothing. A black screen.
d) A small blue dialogue box which says "Out of Range"
Which I assume means that the resolution has been set out of range of the monitor.

So how do I access the "Display" section of the set up to change it back when I can't actually see anything???????
