Dan, If you're deadset on the Civil estimating, send me your CV. My counterpart in our Civil division (National Estimating Mgr) is also looking for GOOD civil estimators.
Our civil division have offices in most AU cities.
They are paying more than me for GOOD guys.

I interviewed a Grad Eng yesterday (finished uni 18mths ago) for a Jnr / trainee estimator position. He looked OK so we made him an offer. He starts early May.

I still need a good Snr Est tho......

My wife says the same thing Heidi.
She has 3 degrees, including a Masters.
I'm a boilermaker, never been to uni & I earn 5 times what she did when she was full time (last year).
Hence she's decided to be a "lady of leisure" since we moved to Melbourne. She only works 2 days a wk now.

Goodness, maybe I should marry well too!! Coolsmiley

The best my job does is make people think I'm a snob or cleverer than I actually am.

Yeah I left at yr 10.
Always swore I'd never get an office job. Would rather be outside.

Have been in office jobs now for 8yrs. (not counting the 2yrs I spent in China)

Meredith had to put up with the hard times.
I spent many yrs working away from home as Blackzook does now. The 1st 10yrs of our marriage I was only home for an average of 2mths / yr. (about 1 week at a time)

When our daughter was born, she was 3 days old, I was on holidays with 5 weeks to go & the boss rings up & says "be in Newcastle Monday".
My daughter spent the first 3mths of her life in a room at the Novacastrian Hotel.

And the story goes on. To be honest, I'm amazed Meredith is still here.

The upshot is the salary now. If I hadn't spent all those yrs in the middle of nowhere, I wouldn't have anywhere near the amount of job / work experience I have now & that's what I'm getting paid for.

Thanks for the compliment dude.....
I've spent most of my time in heavy construction. Mines, Power stations, Coal Handling Facilities, Ship-loading facilities, Gas plants, Refineries etc.
In the early yrs did a fair bit of commercial stuff around Bris. Low rise refirbs, servo's, wharehouses, that type of thing.
I worked for a crowd who had the maintenance contract for the old sugar mill at New Farm in Bris. (it's appartments now) That was interesting.
Have worked for most of the major ones. Monodelphous, Transfield, John Holland, Barclay mowlem, Theiss, United KG. & a few others.
I did my trade as a boilermaker.
I also hold tickets for;
Advanced Rigger (the old RG1)
Advanced Scaffolder (again the old one)
EWP
Road Roller (unlimited)
Forklift (unlimited, from the days when there was more than 1 ticket)
Crane Oporator C1 (100t)
Overhead Crane LBG
Up until last July I was also a WH&S Gov certified Trainer & Assessor.

Have also done project scheduling & learnt to use Suretrak & P3 scheduling sftware.
More recently have done courses in corporate law etc.
(Only in-house, still haven't been to uni)

I've been employeed as an estimator in some capacity since I came back to Oz from China & have progressed from there.
Before I came to melbourne I worked for United KG. I was the East Coast Cheif Estimator based in Brisbane.
Now I work for McConnell Dowell based in the Melbourne office.
I'm the National Estimating Mgr for the Mechanical Division.
I'm responsible for all tenders done by our Business Unit for Australia, NZ & PNG. We bid on projects ranging from $30m up to about $400m.
Right now I'm only working on 2 tenders. 1 is the Abbot Point coal export terminal expansion in Qld, about $350m
& the other is a gold mine up in the highlands of PNG, about $50m.
