tuning question
#1
Just a little confused with tuning options. If i have a PC3 to tune my exhaust & air box mod now, can i use it later for boost ? I would only be doing a 'stage 1' style of turbo set up & prob make it myself, 225 hp, nice and streetable. Any help would be great.

pc3 wont recognise boost so you'll need more than a pc3, maybe a fmu will work well in this instance. Maj may have more ideas.

Yep you need some sort of boost referenced fueling
2 basic probs to overcome.. PC3 isn't boost referenced and std injectors at std pressures are only good for 190-200hp
simple fix is a FMU http://www.bellengineering.net/Pages/products_FPR.html like the 2025. there not the be all end all but are functional for a set boost pressure , not good for multi boost levels
I'm testing another system today with a bit bigger injector 1.7:1 reg and a pc3usb modified to read from a 3 bar map sensor instead of the TPS , trying to get away from the FMU as most dyno guys don't understand its function and kill engines trying to adjust the PC when the injector duty cycle is already at 100%
Next level would be Like Leonard and many others use ,a boost based engine manager add on and big injectors .
other option is a second set of injectors and boost based management, leaving the std injector/ecu un modified

Thanks guys, that pretty much confirms what i thought, ie, boost reference. I agree an FMU is not the best way of tuning. So by using a boost based engine manager add on do you loose all std dash function or is it a piggy back type of system ? Would like to keep it all functional thats all.

jzbusa dont know how accurate ths is but if you alreadyhave a pc3 i belive dyno jet make a plug in expansion unit for it that measures boost and you can set it to add a certain amount of fuel per pound of boost which would work with bigger injectors i guess not sure if that is something that will help you tho.

If you plan on sticking to around 225hp an fmu may be sufficant,.....but once you get a taste the urge to "turn it up" will be thing that brings you undone.
A piggyback unit will normally still have your dash still functional.

Dan, thats an interesting addon for the pc.

Leonard or some of the other Sydney guys could give you good info about using a piggyback with bigger injectors, haven't tried that myself, i use either a FMU/powercommander or secondary injectors /microtech.

For just street low boost the FMU /powercommander is a good option that doesn't cost alot, thats why Velocity and Rcc stg 1 kits come as FMU systems
depends on many things ...what you want out of the turbo , who is tuning it,price your willing to pay , motor mods
