ok was cruising at 90kph in 6th gear on saturday and all of a sudden i lost power and started spewing whitesmoke everywere. turned the bikeoff and let it sit then babied it the 6kms home power seemed to be restored and was running ok apart from a bit of smoke. got home pulled the plugs which had a light coating of oil on all 4 plugs evenly that shouldnt have been there. bike blows smoke while ideling which decreases in volume upto operating temperature and then only slightly smokes at operating temperature. the bike didnt get hot at all, hasnt missed a beat really since i bought until now. there is no coolant in the oil or vice versa i got no idea whats wrong anyone else know? thanks guys oh its a 99 by the way

Nothing is that terminal!
The fact that nothing went "bang" and it kept running would indicate that parts haven't broken and it sounds like bits are well lubricated!
Maybe somehow it's sucking in gobs of oil. More at idle = higher vacuum which would support that. Mmmh, well, having played with my 99, I can't think of too many things. There's a breather from the gearbox that goes into the air box...., but why would it suddenly suck so much oil in?
Does anyone know if there's an oil passage through the head gasket that might have let go? Mind you, that would normally do only one pot, and this is all 4 pots by the sound of it. Got to be an easy one!

yeah im hoping so bear thanks for the reply i might see about putting a breather onto it rather than it dumping it back into the airbox. ill also open up the airbox and have a look inside it

That sounds like a good start. Oil in the air cleaner will lead you to the culprit

Could also be a busted head gasket Dantheman. Don't necessarily get coolant in your oil, can get lotsa smoke and shit.

Do you have the kit to do a compression test?

Maybe, if the bike has been layed down on its side oil from the gearbox may have seeped into the air filter compartment.

Just a maybe that is.

hasnt been layd over for over 20,000kms. it may be the head gasket but i was a bit dubious that the gasket would have gone on all four pots. oh well i bought another bike this morningso i can get around and give me time to inspect this issue more thouroughly

Take your airbox off and see what happens.

Check airbox and filter for contamination.

Did you overfill your oil?

Pair valve sucking oil? (this would account for the smoke not the plugs thou)

Does the bike run properly otherwise? Idle, underload?

The oil may cause detenation if continued use.

A few inexpensive checks can save you $$

havent riden since legend. i dont think i was overfilled because i complely drained the oil out and put about 3.8litres in. i will pull the aibox tomorrow and check. riding it home from when it lost power it seemed to run fine and it idles well and smoothly so not sure

Hey bloke,

Mate, not sure if you changed the oil filter or not, but these are the recommendations;
Oil change - 3,300ml
Oil and filter - 3,500ml
Engine overhaul - 4,200ml

If you put in 3,800ml and you just did an oil change - you're over by 500ml (half a litre)!

did oil and filter and emptied the oil cooler. thats what i do everytime and its what i did on my last busa with no issues so i figured it was ok. i might drain a touch out and see in that case.
