Heidi and Max argue about the Cronulla Riots ??? Oh boy... this I gotta hear. C'mon Heidi... fess up !

I have seen part of the coverage of what Peter Costello said and maybe I missed a bit, but he never actually pointed the finger at any racial or religious group. So how come I hear all this whining about it being a Muslim bash ? Did I miss some footage ? Was there a direct mention of Muslims or Arabs ? If not, then why doth everyone protest too much ??

I agreed with his comments (at least, the ones I heard), but not in relation to any particular religion or race. I think it should apply to everyone - and I don't think we're exempt just because we were born here. Yes, it is good to hear someone say it out loud. There will be an outcry and of course the media will try to be the national conscience and tell us all how outraged we are... even tho we aren't.

I think I'm gonna start a thread called "Media as the National Conscience". I'm getting tired of hearing from the evening news broadcaster that Australians are outraged by this... Australians think this way or that way.... Australians should do such-and-such - when in reality, when you talk to the man in the street, (or woman) its either a non-issue (example : AWB) or they think the opposite. If they took the sensationalism and bias out of the news, it might be worth watching. Then it would just be accurate information and we dummies could make our own decisions and judgements. What a novelty.

Oh crap... is there a soapbox icon ????

Anyway... back to the subject. I support anyone of any race and any religion who wants to live here, observe our laws, show respect to our culture and our values and integrate into our society. In return, I'll show respect to their culture and their values and I'll defend their rights to the same freedoms as anyone else. But in the end (as I said in an earlier post) our national charter states we are an english speaking, christian democracy - and these values are not negotiable.

Hey... two soapboxes... one post. What a waste ! The older I get, the better I was. Regards.... Rob (Astro)Edited by: AstroBusa at: 25/2/06 12:37 am

Didn't Costello actually say "Sharia Law" in one of his speills? I thought so. Did you see the way the Muslims head Imams come out shaking their moral fists at anyone who says anything about the shit Muslim fanatics are behaving in the world. I agree with you Rob, respect our ways as well as their own and we'll do the same. My added view is "f*** with us and we'll go to war to protect our ways", for want of stronger words.

Not sure Max. That comment wasn't included in the broadcast I saw. Comments from the Imam's were shown, but they seemed out of context based on the portions of Costello's speech I heard.

Ray, "please explain".... lol.... The older I get, the better I was. Regards.... Rob (Astro)

I think the Church of Scientology is a good one to be in. Without all them scientists we wouldn't have our Hayabusa. (I think that's the correct term for plural as well as singular).

Rob,
have a look at the video on the nine news site. He actually stated Sharia Law - want to live by it - got to Saudi or Iran where they live it, don't stay here. Plain as.

So tell me Rob, and anyone else keeping up with this thread, do you agree with our treasurer? Should we allow sharia law to have an impact on Australian life or should everyone, regardless of their background, be held accountable strictly to the Westminster legal system? What should be done to stop sharia law being practiced in Ozzie, and how far would anyone here be prepared to go to protect our way of life? Understand that sharia means stoning women who are unfaithful and the execution of the men in those circumstances, the cutting off of hands of those steal etc.
If I'm wrong and someone on this list knows better I would welcome your input.
I'm very black and white on this issue, but then we do live ina democracy don't we, that gives us freedoms to have our say, some other forms of "community" don't give those freedoms.
Do Google and look at what it means. pretty significant to any community that is ruled by it - it is specifically a Muslim way of life - Quote "Sharia (Arabic: شريعة; also Sharī'ah, Shari'a, Shariah or Syariah) is the Arabic word for Islamic law, also known as the Law of Allah, and governs both secular and religious life of the devout Muslim"

What sort of can of worms is Sharia Law going to open in Australia.

Max.... we already have a good legal system here. It's civilised, not barbaric. If people want to live under another legal system, I'm sure they could go find a country that would satisfy that need.

If people come to Australia, they sign something which basically says say "Yes... I'll abide by your laws and respect your customs. I also acknowledge and agree that your national identity criteria over-ride all others."

Its not acceptable for them to say some time later "Well, I'm here now and I've got rights too, so I want you to change everything to suit me - otherwise I'll call you all racists and cause unrest and upheaval."

I know that what I'm saying amounts to "We expect you to learn the language, adopt our ways and integrate peacefully into our society - but our culture, values, national identity and customs are not negotiable." Despite the fact that stament sounds unreasonable (and I try to be a reasonable person in all things), it isn't. The immigration papers don't include a section which asks "What must we change about ourselves to make Australia more acceptable to you ?". We are already one of the most tolerant countries in the world !!!!

I don't like Costello much, but I think he's on the right track with this one.

Ok... I think I need to adopt my "no politics" mantra now and quietly leave this thread. The older I get, the better I was. Regards.... Rob (Astro)
