Service Concerns

Volvi Wrote:personally ive always serviced my own that way you know what was done to it, however isnt there a warranty issue on new bikes? say at 20thou you have a warranty prob but service book only shows first 1k service, isnt that a prob?

If you read the warranty information in your booklet, it recommends you use genuine parts and a qualified mechanic.
They do like to scare you into submission by saying that your warranty will be void. They cannot say that here, because the distance for someone living in remote area that has bought a Suzuki could mean he might have to travel 2 days to get to one. As long as it is serviced by a qualified mechanic, i think!.

But realistically, they can say what they like at the dealer, even if you've had it serviced by them all it's life. It's just less likely to occur if they've done the servicing (they won't hold up the claim from Suzuki) where as, if you've done all the work your self, they will be less likely to help I suppose.

The dealer in town here, tried to scare me, saying I'd void my warranty, and that they need to check valve clearances etc on the first service.

As if they would really do all that for a hours labour cost!!!!
Not likely!!
Worked in car dealerships enough to know what goes on....it's not good. Foolishly thought that the motorcycle industry would be slightly different, but unfortunately.......it's not!!

It's worth a read, it might make you feel a little more settled doing it yourself.

I even got offered a job at a Honda dealership, servicing motorcycles, with no previous experience on bikes, other than my own!!!!

Needless to say, doubts in my own abilities prevented me from taking it further!!

Hey mate, I sat and waited for hours while they did mine. They gave me a list of everything they did attached to the invoice.

I put this in a different thread:

Change engine oil, type SX4
Replace oil filter
Inspect air filter
Synchronize throttle bodies
Set throttle position sensor
Check for air and oil leaks around motor
Check brake operation
Check brake fluids
Service battery :Wtf:
Check tyre pressures and condition
Check wheel and steering head bearings
Lube cables
Set throttle and clutch cable free
Grease lever pivots
Clean, lube and adjust drive chain (Note: adjustment good, no change.)
Set wheel alignment
Check torque on chassi bolts
Check electrics and switches
Check head light setting
Test ride and final check
Check lever and pedal positions
Bike detailed (appeared on invoice, not the attached checklist)

Cost Breakdown:
Repairs $160.00
Consumables $51.20
Parts $25.45
GST $23.67

Total: $260.30

It's funny you know, I got the same sheet also, just I'm a little more sceptical than yourself, as I'm not convinced they would have done all of the stuff on the sheet!!

If you absolutely have to take your bike anywhere to get anything done make someone inspect the bike with you when you drop it off and agree on it's condition and take the time to inspect it when you pick it up.

I got my tank scratched through to the undercoat when it went in for the 1st service and didn't notice until I washed it.

The service guy has since asked me what he has to do to get back my business and he's now busy working out how much thrust it takes to get a pig to fly.

Parts. gear etc are something else. Use the same shop as much as possible and never pay the asking price for anything. Get to know someone on the counter and you've got an automatic 20% discount.

If you are interested on my understanding of oils I have created a thread under Tech called Ramblings on Oil in response to a couple of commments on this thread; ie Synth for bedding in - no, Cushioning Affect etc

These are my views only based on a considerable aount of research on the net (Im not an engineer or chemist). The great oil debate (as it is dubbed) has deforrested whole continents on the Harley forums where it is talked about endlessly and being the lonely person I am I actually read.

These are only my views, no disrespect intended to any one. If you disagree with what I have written feel free to explain but please no flaming.

The only thing I can say unequivically about oils is follow the manufacturers recommendations (type, viscosity, change intervals) and you cant go wrong.

Hi Guys. My Beast is just about due for its first service. Anyone recommend a good dealer or workshop in Perth? I will not be taking it back to the selling dealer (a certain un named dealer in North Perth) for servicing due to their very sloppy pre-delivery checks/setup (chain slack 45mm, rear wheel out of alignment by one full mark on the swingarms and rear axle nut nowhere near correct torque!!!!!).

Appreciate any advice.

Ok where do i start....

'No more dealer servicing for me, doing everything myself, right down to the valve clearances...because I know....there is no way in this life time any dealer mechanic is going to spend the right amount of time to get them right, much less even take the cam cover off to check them!!!

It's bullshit....trust NO ONE!!!'

- Too true. They are there to make a dollar, most couldnt
care less about customer service an if something DID go wrong
with the bike, there more like to point the finger to the rider
than the mechanic who did a half arsed job on servicing it!

"Guys might say they havent the time to do this BUT
you should make time as NO 1 will look after your stuff like you will
If you damage it you'll live with it better than getting worked up over some punk kid at the shop ( stress who needs it)
BIGGEST + i think is you will learn more about ya bike by checking shit out ."
- Shredders on the money. Its like when you get a rental,
Do you look after it? HELL no,you thrash the life
out of that rental. Its not yours! Its true,no one will look after your stuff like you will!

"Change engine oil, type SX4

My arse they did all that for 260.30.
You couldnt pay a mexican hes months wage to do that for you.
God dealerships make me sick sometimes.

I bought my 07 brand new an remember when how they talked it up,
unbreakable etc,2 finger breaking..PFfff hahahah
Yeh my arse! Showed him the chain an he was like nah look
at the tire etc... I told him,but you said it was unbreakable?
Nothings unbreakable...
Like i said, they all make me sick.
If you want something done right, you have to do it yourself,
or leave it to someone who you can trust.

Apologies for the rant!
It just makes me sad how dealers are, always too happy for
the bike/vehicle to leave the showroom floor, but if somethings
wrong with it,never happy to see it back....

Bike shops never fill the bloody book out anytway - never had an entry in any of the many new bikes I have had - I have swapped shops though because of shit service and has a lug broken on my first service. Beside the $$ they charge you which os a ripoff the work is never satisfactory but unless you have the tools and place and time which I dont then you only have the option for a bike shop - I have found one recently that does a good job and the shop is organised so until they piss me off I will keep ging there. its a tough decision and pisses me off as well

For anyone on Brissy sth side, try One Stop motorcycles, in Elliott Ct Browns Plains.
They are good. They are interested in people & look after people's bikes. They do it right.
They have worked on every bike I've owned.
I bought my Busa from Springwood Suzuki, I took it back to them once & never again.
I was very happy to ride straight past them to take it to Onestop.

My major concerns about any workshop service is that they.
a. Do what they are supposed to do and
b. Don't damage the furrckin bike.

So far I'm in luck at my present dealer in Cessnock.

Anyone know anywhere good in TOWNSVILLE?
Yamaha service caused my friends R1 back tyre to catch fire as soon as he rode out the shop?? f*** knows how.
Kawasaki service called me the 2 day's after a service to my R1 and said they forgot to tention the chain or somthing and said it would be a 5 min job to fix yet it was there the whole day!
Suzuki service to my friends ZX10 this morning he called up telling me not to go there as theve caused an oil leak and spilled some kind of fluid over his plastics and now there discoloured!! (im booked in there on wed too lol)
Im a one income family i have 3 kids... so just to throw money into a servce where they dont do what there supposed to and actually bikes are coming out damaged is a great concern to me....

G'Day fella's
My two bobs worth on genuine servicing-- my son has a 01 TL1000r which he had our local (and Brisbanes biggest Suzi dealer) perform a 24k service on, after which no. 1 plug lead caused a hole in the radiator due to not being pushed home fully and a small pebble lodged between it and the rad, they charged us to fix the rad and had the bit of grit taped to the invoice saying the plug cap can often shake loose.
Had a winge to shop owner who said he would cut that cost out of our next service which was a 48k on our hayabusa, not long after that service it started surging which as it turned out was not due to anything service related but in the process of checking the bike out I found-
1/ Throttle bodies fully loose from the service
2/ Air flap in airbox disconected from lincage
3/ fuel filter in external fuel pump fell out in bits(was 7 years old):I paid extra to have this looked at while trying to eliminate surge.
4/ Pair valve hose had an m10 allen bolt shoved down it
5/ Irridium plugs I paid for during 48k service had been replaced with std. plugs shortly afterwards while Suzuki tried to find surge.
6/ TPS settings where way off std. position?
There are quiet a few other issues I have found since I last had my bikes to a dealer, it now leaves me with the question of if I buy a new K8 or 9 who will I entrust it to for the warranty period? I am an A grade mechanic myself but I dont work in a shop who can stamp the service book.

Damn Norvin that's a horror story...

The scary thing is that plenty of people could be getting the same level of service but aren't as aware as yourself.
