Yep, there are some bad $300 helmets out there but there are some damn good ones as well.
Interesting to note that when a friend and I performed a crash test on our helmets two years ago, by having a motorist knock our bikes over with the helmets on the underside, the $1300 Shoei snapped the whole chin section clean off, while the $300 Nolan took a crack on the outer surface.
Both helmets took the full force of the bike falling on them to the footpath.
Like everyone says though, find the one that fits best and is built with firm innards. If they are soft and spongy inside they will loossen up very fast.
